‘Lucky' man who survived frightening heart attack shares story to help save others

Three months ago, Steve Malach was visiting Highland Park on Halloween to trick-or-treat with his grandkids, when he suddenly collapsed.

“There was no advance warning. The only thing I can tell you was I was carrying my granddaughter and three days later I woke up in the hospital,” said Malach, 70, who lives in Michigan.

Malach would later learn he was in sudden cardiac arrest. His son, Jeff, ran to check on his dad, who had collapsed on a neighbor’s lawn.

“I just didn’t know what to do, right? I attempted to put my hands on his chest. And I couldn’t tell you if I got one compression, two compressions or zero compressions,” Jeff Malach said. “Luckily a neighbor walked out. And then very quickly, Ashley and Claire showed up.”

“Someone pulled me aside and said there’s an emergency over here. There’s a man down. They can probably use your help,” said Ashley Kelly, who lives near where Malach had collapsed.

Kelly is a nurse anesthetist at Endeavor Health Highland Park Hospital.

Her friend and fellow nurse anesthetist, Claire Farren, also got a phone call from a neighbor, asking for help. Both women arrived just as another neighbor started CPR and then Kelly jumped in.

“And I just said to Ashley just let me know when you’re tired and I’ll take over CPR for you,” Farren said.

“It’s exhausting to do high-quality CPR, if you’re going fast and you’re pushing hard. And with Steve, we did end up breaking a rib and he did end up having a punctured lung and did need a chest tube, but in the end, he’s alive,” said Dr. David Davidson, a cardiologist with Endeavor Health.

Davidson is friends with Jeff Malach and was up the street trick-or-treating with his own children when Steve Malach collapsed. He too got a frantic phone call to help.

“The important thing is stay calm, perform high-quality CPR and early defibrillation — those are keys for success,” Davidson said.

Less than 10% of people who suffer sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive. So the Malach family knows Steve is lucky to not only be alive, but also to have no lingering effects.

“We were incredibly lucky, but most people can also be incredibly lucky because we’re talking about CPR. This isn’t surgery. Anybody can do it,” Jeff Malach said.

That’s why Steve, Jeff and the Malach family will reunite with those who performed CPR at a special community CPR training event on Feb. 3 at Highland Park Hospital.

Steve Malach is traveling in from Michigan for the event, with immense gratitude in this heart.

“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. That’s all I can say,” he said, getting emotional as he shared what he plans to tell those who helped saved his life.

“My husband said, you know, he was super proud, and he was like, ‘You know, you guys went from ‘Mom mode’ to lifesavers,’” Farren said.

While they have medical training, becoming a life saver is something Farren, Kelly and Davidson all say anyone can do, if they learn CPR basics.

“Don’t be afraid to go fast and push hard,” Davidson said.

While Saturday’s community event in Highland Park is full, here are other resources to help you learn CPR basics:

Chicago set to get new public bathrooms. Here's what we know so far

Chicago could soon see new public bathrooms.

Ald. Daniel La Spata announced to residents last week that the city is on track to begin a new pilot program that would bring public bathrooms to the city. The city is under contract with JCDecaux to build the bathrooms, with four setups “ready for installation.”

“We have never been closer to having a public bathroom pilot in Chicago!” La Spata wrote in a newsletter to constituents. “Meeting with JCDecaux today, they confirmed that the first four high quality public bathrooms are ready for installation as part of their contract with the City. I’m excited to see the City work with such an experienced operator and hopeful that we can determine appropriate locations in the very near term. It’s a great opportunity to bring new services to our residents!”

The news comes years after officials first promised changes to the lack of access to public bathrooms in the city.

A 2021 Chicago Tribune investigation found the city lacked access to free public bathrooms, with “swaths of the city” containing few or even none.

The contract between Chicago and JCDecaux was announced early last year.

“There is a straightforward path to providing clean and safe bathrooms for every Chicagoan, and this remains the most popular policy that I have worked on from 1st Ward residents, advocacy groups, Chambers of Commerce, and other professional associations,” La Spata told residents in May.

Details on where and when the new bathrooms will be available are expected to be announced at a later date.

‘Can't believe this worked': Man uses $8 Disney World ticket from 1978 to get into Magic Kingdom

An old family keepsake turned out to be a “golden ticket” when a man said he used a Walt Disney World ticket from the 1970s to get into Magic Kingdom.

In a TikTok video with nearly nine million views, Matthew Ables said he found a ticket book from 1978 that had been “collecting dust” all these years.

According to Ables, the pass, which was worth $8 in the 1970s, had never been used and had no expiration date.

He booked a flight to Orlando, arrived to the ticket booth at Magic Kingdom and presented the ticket, unsure if they would even accept it.

“I was getting nervous there because she started aggressively stamping ‘void’ all over the ticket booklet,” Ables said in the video.

A short time later, a cast member gave him a yellow pass that granted Ables access into the park for the day.

Today, a one-day ticket to Magic Kingdom ranges from $109 to $164, depending on the day you visit, which is more than 20 times its original value.

When Ables scanned his pass and entered the park, he only had one thing to say, “I can’t believe this actually worked.”

New I-PASS stickers replace Illinois Tollway transponders. Here's what to know

Illinois drivers are set for a big change when it comes to the Tollway.

That clunky I-PASS transponder on your windshield will soon be a thing of the past as the Illinois Tollway says transponder boxes will soon be replaced with radio frequency identification (RFID) sticker tags.

The new stickers were first made available last week at oases, participating Jewel-Osco stores and the Tollway’s headquarters on Jan. 26, but they will also be available for online ordering by February.

“I-PASS Sticker Tags mark the latest advance in toll collection,” Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse said in a statement. “Sticker tags are being adopted by toll agencies across the country and by the Illinois Tollway as they provide a convenient and reliable and travel experience for our customers.”

According to officials, 19 states are part of the E-ZPass program, and the tag will work for all of those states.

Unlike transponders, there will be no deposit fee, according to the Tollway. Drivers will also be able to receive multiple stickers to link to the same I-PASS account, meaning that stickers won’t have to be moved between vehicles.

What to do if you already have a transponder

According to officials, current transponders will remain active until their designated expiration date.

The stickers can be used immediately on the Illinois Tollway system, though officials say that there may be a 24-hour waiting period for use on the Chicago Skyway or for other states that are on the E-ZPass system.

What to do with your old transponder

The Tollway asked customers to dispose of old I-PASS transponders in “an environmentally sound way.” Drivers can return them to the Illinois Tollway or go to the Earth911 website, search by “lithium-ion batteries” and enter a zip code to find available recycling locations.

Where should you put your new sticker?

“I-PASS Sticker Tags are required to be mounted to a vehicle’s windshield near the rearview mirror,” according to the Tollway, “and like license plate or city stickers, they are not designed to be moved between vehicles. There is no battery, and they last until removed from the vehicle.”

A look at the hundreds of eateries offering deals for Chicago Restaurant Week

A 17-day event showcasing some of the best food of all cuisines across the Chicago area, Chicago Restaurant Week is in full swing heading into its second weekend.

Running through Feb. 4, this year’s event is the 17th iteration of Chicago Restaurant Week, featuring more than 380 restaurants. Many of the participating restaurants are located in the suburbs.

Making the event an even greater opportunity for those entrenched in Chicago’s culinary scene, as many as 20 participating restaurants are Michelin-rated.

Reservations and menus for the 17-day event went live last month, according to officials.

Chicago Restaurant Week reflects the passion and vitality of our restaurant community,” President and CEO of the Illinois Restaurant Association Sam Toia said in the release. “Celebrations like this give diners the perfect reason to explore every single pocket of the city and finally get to that spot they’ve been wanting to try – all while bringing essential business to restaurants during Chicago’s winter season.”

According to Choose Chicago, participating restaurants span 31 Chicago neighborhoods. 46 suburban restaurants are also included, organizers said.

Restaurants that participate in Chicago Restaurant Week offer curated, prix fixe menus with prices set at either $25 for brunch or lunch, and $42 or $59 for dinner. Beverages, tax and gratuity are not included.

Michelin-rated restaurants participating in Chicago Restuarant Week

One two-star Michelin restaurant, Moody Tongue, is on the list of participating restaurants for 2024. However, many “Bib Gourmand” Michelin restaurants, as well as Daises, which received a Green Star in 2023, are on the list.

Here’s the full list of Michelin-rated restaurants participating in Chicago Restaurant Week for 2024:

  • Avec (Bib Gourmand), West Loop
  • Bloom Plant Based Kitchen (Bib Gourmand), Wicker Park
  • Cabra (Bib Gourmand), West Loop
  • Cira (Bib Gourmand), West Loop
  • Daisies (Green Star), Logan Square
  • Moody Tongue (Two Stars), South Loop
  • Boka (One Star), Lincoln Park
  • Esmé (One Star), Lincoln Park
  • Frontera Grill (Bib Gourmand), River North
  • Gilt Bar (Bib Gourmand), River North
  • Girl & The Goat (Bib Gourmand), West Loop

  • Proxi (Bib Gourmand), West Loop
  • Table, Donkey and Stick (Bib Gourmand), Logan Square
  • Virtue (Bib Gourmand), Hyde Park

You can find the full list of participating restaurants and menus here.

Finding the best Chicago Restaurant Week Deals

Restaurant Week deals vary between three different price points — $25, $42 and $59. Between the hundreds of menus in dozens of Chicago neighborhoods and suburbs, picking a place for dinner or lunch may be a bit overwhelming.

That’s why a Chicago Reddit user put together a spreadsheet detailing potential savings, costs and more.

The post, which was shared in a Subreddit dedicated to Chicago food, is done annually for Chicago Restaurant Week, mirroring ones seen in previous years, and is often hailed by residents.

“The hero we all need,” one user wrote.

In an effort to help categorize the best deals, the spreadsheet breaks down the offerings into a handful of different categories including “Top $59 dinners,” “Top $42 dinners,” “Top Brunch” and more. It’s based on each restaurant’s “Restaurant Week” menu “compared to their current menu.”

“The best deals are decided based on whether you are definitely going to save money, definitely going to overspend, or whether you could save or spend depending on your choice,” the user wrote, noting however that accuracy cannot be guaranteed and diners should check with restaurants to confirm details first.

According to the spreadsheet, the “Top $59 Dinners” — or rather, the Chicago Restaurant Deals that offer diners the most value — come from Nia, Tanoshii, Girl, and the Goat and Boka.

What to know as Illinois Tollway begins to phase out transponders

A staple of the interior of many vehicles in the Chicago area for decades will be phased out in the coming year as the Illinois Tollway initiates a change in how tolls are collected.

According to the Illinois Tollway, I-PASS transponders will be phased out in favor of radio frequency identification (RFID) sticker tags that will be issued in the coming months.

Officials say the stickers will be available at oases and the Tollway’s headquarters at the end of January, and will be available for online ordering by February.

“The Illinois Tollway is continuing to adopt new tolling technology as it evolves, and I-PASS Sticker Tags mark the latest development in toll collection,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse in a statement. “Sticker tags are being adopted by toll agencies across the country and by the Illinois Tollway as they provide a convenient, reliable and less expensive travel experience for our customers.”

Nazi death camp survivors mark 79th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation on Holocaust Remembrance Day

A group of survivors of Nazi death camps marked the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp during World War II in a modest ceremony Saturday in southern Poland.

About 20 survivors from various camps set up by Nazi Germany around Europe laid wreaths and flowers and lit candles at the Death Wall in Auschwitz, where the Nazis executed thousands of inmates, mostly Polish resistance members and others.

Later the group, along with state officials and other participants gathered for a ceremony by a brick women’s barrack at Birkenau that has recently undergone conservation. Next, they prayed and lit candles at the monument in Birkenau, near the crematoria ruins. They were memorializing around 1.1 million camp victims, mostly Jews. The memorial site and museum are located near the city of Oswiecim.

Observances were also held in many other countries Saturday. Nearly 6 million European Jews were killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust — the mass murder of Jews and other groups before and during World War II.

Marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the survivors were accompanied by Polish Senate Speaker Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska, Culture Minister Bartlomiej Sienkiewicz and Israeli Ambassador Yacov Livne.

The theme of the observances was the human being, symbolized in simple, hand-drawn portraits that were beamed on a screen during the observances in Birkenau. They were meant to stress that the horror of Auschwitz-Birkenau lies in the suffering of people held and killed there.

In Germany, where people laid flowers and lit candles at memorials for the victims of the Nazi terror, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his country would continue to carry the responsibility for this “crime against humanity.”

He called on all citizens to defend Germany’s democracy and fight antisemitism as the country marked the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

“Never again’ is every day,” Scholz said in his weekly video podcast. “Jan. 27 calls out to us: Stay visible! Stay audible! Against antisemitism, against racism, against misanthropy — and for our democracy.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose country is fighting to repel Russia’s full-scale invasion, posted an image of a Jewish menorah on X, formerly known as Twitter, to mark the remembrance day.

“Every new generation must learn the truth about the Holocaust. Human life must remain the highest value for all nations in the world,” said Zelenskyy, who is Jewish and had relatives who were lost in the Holocaust.

“Eternal memory to all Holocaust victims!” Zelenskyy tweeted.

In Italy, Holocaust commemorations included a torchlit procession alongside official statements from top political leaders.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said that her conservative nationalist government was committed to eradicating antisemitism that she said had been “reinvigorated” amid the Israel-Hamas war. Meloni’s critics have long accused her and her Brothers of Italy party, which has neofascist roots, of failing to sufficiently atone for its past.

Police were also on alert after pro-Palestinian activists indicated that they would ignore a police order and go ahead with a rally planned to coincide with the Holocaust commemorations. Italy’s Jewish community has complained that such protests have become occasions for the memory of the Holocaust to be co-opted by anti-Israel forces and used against Jews.

In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Jews and Muslims from the country and from abroad gathered in Srebrenica to jointly observe Holocaust Remembrance Day, and to promote compassion and dialogue amid the Israel-Hamas war.

It was organized by the center preserving the memory of Europe’s only acknowledged genocide since the Holocaust — the massacre in 1995 of more than 8,000 Muslim Bosniaks in Srebrenica in Bosnia’s interethnic war.

The event underscored the message that the two communities share the experience of persecution and must stay united in their commitment to peace.

New York law professor Menachem Rosensaft told The Associated Press on the eve of his participation in the Srebrenica commemoration that this year’s observances were especially important. He said that’s because they come just months after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, which became the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.

“We need to bring people together and find common ground,” said Rosensaft, the son of Holocaust survivors. “To make sure it doesn’t happen again, this has to become the conscience of the world.”

He said the international commemoration day, created by the United Nations in 2005, is important to ensure the world remembers the Holocaust long after the survivors and their forbears are gone.

Earlier in the week, the countries of the former Yugoslavia signed an agreement in Paris to jointly renovate Block 17 in the red-brick Auschwitz camp and install a permanent exhibition there in memory of around 20,000 people who were deported from their territories and brought to the block. Participating in the project will be Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia.

Preserving the camp, a notorious symbol of the horrors of the Holocaust, with its cruelly misleading “Arbeit Macht Frei” (“Work Makes One Free”) gate, requires constant effort by historians and experts, and substantial funds.

The Nazis, who occupied Poland from 1939-1945, at first used old Austrian military barracks at Auschwitz as a concentration and death camp for Poland’s resistance fighters. In 1942, the wooden barracks, gas chambers and crematoria of Birkenau were added for the extermination of Europe’s Jews, Roma and other nationals, as well as Russian prisoners of war.

Soviet Red Army troops liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau on Jan. 27, 1945, with about 7,000 prisoners there, children and those who were too weak to walk. The Germans had evacuated tens of thousands of other inmates on foot days earlier in what is now called the Death March, because many inmates died of exhaustion and cold in the sub-freezing temperatures.

Since 1979, the Auschwitz-Birkenau site has been on the UNESCO list of World Heritage.

In a huff, Trump walks out on lawyer's closing at defamation trial before jury begins deliberations

A jury began deliberations Friday in the defamation trial against former President Donald Trump, deciding whether he owes writer E. Jean Carroll additional millions after a jury last year concluded that he sexually abused her in 1996.

The jury began its work after closing arguments punctuated by Trump’s dramatic exit from the courtroom as one of Carroll’s lawyers spoke.

He later returned as his lawyer defended him over statements he made while president in June 2019, and he remained until deliberations began.

Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, asked jurors to award $24 million in compensatory damages and much more in punitive damages.

Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, said Trump told the truth when he refuted her claims, and she said Carroll has more fame and is better poised for success because of her accusations against Trump.

Kaplan was only a few minutes into a closing that lasted more than an hour in Manhattan federal court when Trump suddenly rose from his seat at the defense table and walked toward the exit, pausing to scan the packed courtroom as members of the Secret Service leaped up to follow him out.

The unexpected departure prompted Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, who is unrelated to Carroll’s attorney, to speak up, briefly interrupting the closing argument to note: “The record will reflect that Mr. Trump just rose and walked out of the courtroom.”

The walkout came only minutes after the judge, without the jury present, threatened to send Habba to jail for continuing to talk when he told her to stop.

“You are on the verge of spending some time in the lockup. Now sit down,” the judge told Habba, who immediately complied.

Trump, who was not required to attend the civil lawsuit proceedings, had appeared agitated all morning, vigorously shaking his head as Carroll’s attorney branded him a liar who had incited a “social media mob” to attack her client.

“This case is about punishing Donald Trump for what he’s done and what he continues to do,” Roberta Kaplan continued. “This trial is about getting him to stop.”

Later, Trump returned to the courtroom to hear Habba argue that he should not be made to pay Carroll for comments that set off hate messages from strangers.

Habba showed the jury a video in which Trump said a jury’s verdict last year finding that he had sexually abused Carroll was “a disgrace” and “a continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time.”

“You know why he has not wavered?” Habba asked the jury. “Because it’s the truth.”

That statement prompted an objection that the judge sustained with a warning that “if you violate my instructions again, Ms. Habba, you may have consequences.”

Habba told jurors that Carroll’s once-thriving career was in a slump and her pay as a gossip columnist at Elle magazine had been reduced to $60,000 when she chose to reveal her claims against Trump, winning a level of fame and riches she hadn’t seen before.

“She’s living the life of the rich and famous,” Habba said.

Roberta Kaplan warned jurors not to adopt the defense argument that Carroll would not face online threats if she had chosen not to make claims against Trump.

“Donald Trump is not the victim here,” she said.

The judge later instructed nine jurors that they are only to decide what Trump owes, if anything, to Carroll after a different jury last May awarded her $5 million.

The final remarks from the lawyers come a day after Trump managed to sneak past a federal judge’s rules severely limiting what he could say during his turn on the witness stand, which wound up lasting just 3 minutes. He left fuming that he hadn’t been given an opportunity to refute Carroll’s sexual abuse accusations.

“She said something that I considered to be a false accusation,” Trump said, later adding: “I just wanted to defend myself, my family and, frankly, the presidency.” The jury was told by the judge to disregard both remarks.

The jury last May concluded that Trump sexually abused Carroll in the spring of 1996 in the changing room of a luxury Manhattan department store. It also found that he defamed her in 2022 by claiming she made up the allegation to sell a memoir.

Trump, the Republican frontrunner in this year’s presidential election, has long regretted his decision not to testify at that trial, blaming his lawyers for bad advice.

During her closing, Roberta Kaplan told jurors that the current case was not about a sexual assault.

“We had that case,” she said, referencing the first trial. “That’s why Donald Trump’s testimony was so short yesterday. He doesn’t get a do-over this time.”

As she finished her argument, the lawyer urged jurors to support “the principle that the rule of law stands for all of us” by sending an unmistakable message to a man who “time and time again has shown contempt for the law.”

She said the jury should award $12 million to repair Carroll’s reputation and another $12 million for the suffering she has endured because of Trump’s attacks. Then, she said an “unusually high punitive award” was also necessary against a man worth billions of dollars “to have any hope of stopping Donald Trump.”

The jury in this new trial has been told they must accept last year’s verdict.

Habba has argued against damages, saying Carroll’s association with Trump had given her the fame she craved and that death threats she received cannot be blamed on Trump’s remarks.

Carroll, 80, testified at last year’s trial that she had a chance encounter with Trump at a Bergdorf Goodman store that was flirtatious and lighthearted until Trump cornered her in a changing room. Her claim that Trump raped her was rejected by last year’s jury, though it agreed she was sexually abused.

Last week, Carroll testified that her career was shattered by Trump’s statements about her claims over the last five years, most recently on the campaign trail for president. She said she bought bullets for a gun she inherited from her father and installed an electronic fence around her home.

On Thursday, Trump testified that he stood “100%” behind comments he made in an October 2002 deposition in which he denied Carroll’s accusations, calling her “sick” and a “whack job.”

Kaplan intends to instruct jurors Friday that the jury last year concluded that Trump had digitally penetrated Carroll in the department store, but the same jury did not find that he had raped her, according to how rape is defined under New York state law.

The Associated Press typically does not name people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Carroll has done.

SoxFest returning for fans after four-year hiatus, team announces

The White Sox are bringing back SoxFest.

After three straight years without the popular fan event, the team announced Friday that 2025 would mark its anticipated return. The fest will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 2005 World Series and the 125th anniversary of the White Sox organization.

Details on where and when the fest will be held have yet to be announced.

The convention was first canceled in 2021 and again in 2022 due to COVID-19-related concerns. In 2023, the team announced SoxFest would again not return “due to several factors.”

“Due to several factors, SoxFest 2023 will not be held this January,” a team statement read at the time. “We recognize our fans may be disappointed the event will not take place. Please check back throughout the 2023 baseball season for updates regarding future plans.”

In 2020, the White Sox held the convention at McCormick Place for the first time.

iPhone update includes ‘Stolen Device Protection': Why you should turn it on

You’re in a crowded bar when a thief watches you unlock your iPhone with your passcode, then swipes it. That sinking feeling hits when you realize it’s gone, along with priceless photos, important files, passwords on banking apps and other vital parts of your digital life.

Apple rolled out an update to its iOS operating system this week with a feature called Stolen Device Protection that makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to access key functions and settings. Users are being urged to turn it on immediately.

Here’s how to activate the new security option and why it’s so important:

Should I turn on stolen device protection?

The software update for iPhones and iPads includes the essential new feature designed to foil thieves from wiping phones for resale or accessing Apple ID or other important accounts. Stolen Device Protection is a new setting that’s included with the latest iOS release, version 17.3.

Apple says the feature, buried in your iPhone’s settings, adds an extra layer of security for users. It addresses a vulnerability that thieves have discovered and exploited: allowing them to lock victims out of their Apple accounts, delete their photos and other files from their iCloud accounts and empty their bank accounts by accessing passwords kept in the Keychain password manager.

Apple is introducing the feature as anecdotal evidence suggests phone thefts are surging. Stories of stolen phones abound on Reddit groups and in news articles in places from Los Angeles to London, where police say pickpocketing, “table surfing” and moped snatching are common tactics.

The Wall Street Journal reported last year how criminals watched people use their passcodes to gain access to their personal information after stealing their phones.

How does stolen device protection work?

Stolen Device Protection keeps track of a user’s “familiar locations,” such as their home or workplace, and adds extra biometric security hoops to jump through if someone tries to use the device to do certain things when it’s away from those places.

It also reduces the importance of passcodes, which thieves can steal by peering over someone’s shoulder or threatening and forcing victims to hand them over, in favor of “biometric” features such as faces or fingerprints that are a lot harder to duplicate.

Let’s say the bar thief that snatched your iPhone tries to erase its contents and settings to sell it. With Stolen Device Protection turned on, the phone will now require a Face ID or Touch ID scan to verify that person is the rightful owner.

And that’s the only way — the new feature doesn’t let someone use the passcode or any other backup method.

Other actions that will trigger this feature if it’s not at a familiar place include using passwords saved in Keychain or payment methods saved in Safari, turning off Lost Mode, applying for a new Apple Card or using the iPhone to set up a new device.

There’s also a second layer designed to slow down thieves trying to access critical security settings. If someone tries to, say, sign out of an Apple ID account, change the passcode or reset the phone while it’s in an unfamiliar location, they’ll have to authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, then do a second facial or fingerprint scan.

Changing an Apple ID password, updating Apple ID security settings, adding or removing Face or Touch ID, and turning off the Find My device feature or Stolen Device Protection also will trigger this feature.

“The security delay is designed to prevent a thief from performing critical operations so that you can mark your device as lost and make sure your Apple account is secure,” the company said. “When your iPhone is in a familiar location, these additional steps will not be required and you can use your device passcode like normal.”

How do I activate stolen device protection?

It’s simple — if you know where to look. But first, you must activate two-factor authentication and Find My device for your Apple ID account, and set up or enable the following on your iPhone: a device passcodeFace ID or Touch IDFind My; and Location Services or it won’t show up.

  • Download and update your iPhone or iPad with the latest iOS 17.3 update.
  • Then go to your settings, scroll down to “Face ID & Passcode” or “Touch ID & Passcode”
  • Tap that and enter your passcode.
  • Scroll down and you’ll see Stolen Device Protection. Depending on your iPhone model, you’ll need to tap or toggle to turn it on or off.

What devices does it apply to?

IPhone XS and newer models, including second- and third-generation SE models.

Why has it been so foggy in Chicago? Here's what's causing it

As dense fog covered the Chicago area for a second straight day, many may have been wondering what’s causing such intense foggy conditions?

The entire Chicago area will remain under a dense fog advisory through 6 p.m. Thursday, potentially impacting both the morning and evening commutes.

“Most of the day will see fog with visibility down to one-half mile,” NBC 5 Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, adding that visibility could be near zero at times.

The dense fog is expected to last throughout the day, and across nearly all of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, the National Weather Service said.

“Prepare for drops in visibility if traveling,” the NWS warned.

So what’s causing it?

Why is it so foggy?

According to NBC 5 Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, the ingredients needed for fog include warm air, cold air, saturdated air and light wind.

“Basically it’s a cloud on the ground,” he said.

But there are different types of fog.

The fog currently in the Chicago area is what is known as advection fog.

“Warm air, moist air blows in from the south and if there is snow or cool moisture on the ground it will come in contact with the warm, moist winds,” the NWS reports. “This contact between the air and ground will cause the air blowing in to become cool. Then dew point rises and creates high humidity and forms fog.”

What else to know about the fog

According to NBC 5 Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, the foggy conditions, along with the area’s current freeze/thaw cycle, were also causing more potholes to form on the roads.

“These are tough to avoid,” Jeanes said, adding that the low visibility and fog were making the conditions more challenging. “Right now, they’re kind of more widespread now that we’ve had a lot of snow melt.”

Martin said the Illinois Department of Transportation was working to fix a large pothole on the inbound Bishop Ford at 130th, with several cars experiencing damage.
