Shooting outside downtown Indianapolis mall wounds 7 children, police say

Seven young people between the ages of 12 and 17 were wounded in a shooting outside a shopping mall in downtown Indianapolis late Saturday night, police said.

Police officers patrolling the area heard shots fired near the Circle Centre Mall shortly after 11:30 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Deputy Chief Tanya Terry said.

The officers found “a large group of juveniles” at the scene, including six who had gunshot wounds and were transported to area hospitals, Terry said during a news briefing at the scene early Sunday morning.

One of the victims was upgraded from critical to stable condition. The other victims all were listed in stable condition, said Terry, who was not able to immediately provide the genders of the victims.

A seventh juvenile with a gunshot wound arrived separately at a hospital and was in stable condition, she said.

“Once again, we have a situation in which young people are resolving conflict with firearms, and it has to stop,” Terry said, later adding, “Conflict should not lead to somebody pulling out a gun and trying to resolve it. The consequences are eternal.”

Investigators believe there was more than one gun used in the shooting, Terry said.

No arrests were made and police did not have any suspects, she said.

Residents displaced by Bensenville apartment building fire

Multiple residents of a Bensenville apartment building were temporarily forced from their homes on Saturday after a fire tore through the structure.

The fire was reported at around 2 p.m. in the 200 block of Sonny Lane. According to the Bensenville Fire Protection District, a battalion chief responded to the scene and determined smoke was coming from the third floor and that everyone had exited the building.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which was contained to one unit. No one was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported, authorities said. Due to the extent of the damage, the building was deemed uninhabitable.

While the entire building was displaced, it wasn’t immediately known how many residents were affected.

The village was working on relocating all those impacted, authorities said.

An investigation was underway on Saturday evening.

Migrants start moving out of two Chicago Park District emergency shelters

A bus was parked outside Piotrowski Park in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood on Saturday afternoon as migrants staying at the park’s field house were relocated to a nearby shelter.

“I am not against anyone because I am also an immigrant,” said Little Village resident Rogelio Diaz. “If the city is helping them, it is very good.”

Migrants started moving out of the park and the Leone Boathouse in Rogers Park on Friday.

“We need to do this in a holistic way,” said Ald. Michael Rodriguez, who represents Chicago’s 22nd Ward. “But Piotrowski Park and other parks need to come back to community use at this point.”

Piotrowski Park’s field house opened as a temporary shelter for migrant families in May.

The city of Chicago previously announced plans to decompress the remaining park facilities in the coming weeks. Those additional emergency shelter sites are Gage Park, Broadway Armory and Brands Park.

Around 738 migrants have been staying at the park facilities across the city.

“Catholic Charities and New Life Centers have been amazing at supporting our migrants to get into more permanent housing and they will continue to do that,” said Rodriguez. “Because of those effort and because of the decrease of new arrivals—we’re able to decompress sites right now.”

As of Saturday morning, 10,136 migrants were staying in 23 shelters across the city. Additionally, 103 migrants were waiting to be placed in shelters, and two additional buses were expected to arrive at some point during the day.

One man staying at the temporary shelter in Gage Park told NBC 5 and Telemundo Chicago that the city planned to move him out in less than two weeks.

“Well, by the eighth of April, we have to leave everything from the shelter. We still don’t know where they are going to send us,” said Carlos Moreno, who is from Venezuela.

While his future remains uncertain, city leaders said they’re doing their best to address the situation.

“Look the federal government need to step up,” Rodriguez said. “We need real comprehensive immigration reform. We need real investments from the federal government.”

Migrants staying at Piotrowski Park were moved to the shelter at 26th Street and Pulaski Road. As for the field house, the park district said it will assess the conditions inside and make any necessary repairs and maintenance before reopening it to the public.

A reopening date had yet to be announced as of Saturday afternoon.

‘Gen V' star Chance Perdomo dead at 27 after motorcycle accident

Originally appeared on E! Online.

Hollywood has lost a rising star.

Chance Perdomo, a cast member of “The Boys” spinoff series “Gen V,” has died. He was 27.

The actor, who also appeared on “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” died as a result of a motorcycle accident, his reps told the Hollywood Reporter in a statement March 30. Nobody else was involved in the accident, the outlet reported.

“His passion for the arts and insatiable appetite for life was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth will carry on in those who he loved dearest,” the statement said. “We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their beloved son and brother.”

Two weeks before his death, Perdomo shared a photo of a motorcycle on his Instagram. He captioned his March 17 post, “Day 77. Final calm before storm. #backontheroad.”

The actor was born in Los Angeles and raised in England. He began his onscreen acting career almost a decade ago.

After appearing in the 2018 BBC film “Killed by My Debt,” which earned him a BAFTA nomination, he went on to play Ambrose Spellman, Sabrina Spellman’s British warlock cousin, on the Netflix series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”

After the show ended its two-season run in 2020, he played Landon in the last three films of the “After” romantic drama movie series, most recently “After Everything,” released in 2023. “Gen V” debuted in September of that year, with him playing Andre Anderson, a “super” college student with magnetic manipulation powers.

This year, Perdomo finished filming the action-comedy movie “Bad Man” with Seann William Scott and Rob Riggle and also began preparing for production on season two of “Gen V.”

“We can’t quite wrap our heads around this,” the producers of the series shared in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. “For those of us who knew him and worked with him, Chance was always charming and smiling, an enthusiastic force of nature, an incredibly talented performer, and more than anything else, just a very kind, lovely person. Even writing about him in the past tense doesn’t make sense.”

They added, “We are so sorry for Chance’s family, and we are grieving the loss of our friend and colleague. Hug your loved ones tonight.”

Parts of Chicago area at marginal risk for severe weather Friday evening

Some western suburbs in the Chicago area will be at a marginal risk for severe weather on Friday evening, with chances of potentially severe thunderstorms and damaging hail.

The storms are expected to move into the region later this evening, with intensity likely picking up around 10 p.m. in the far western suburbs, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.

Though the primary threat for severe weather will be around I-39, west of the Chicago area, scattered storms will continue to move east and will be over the city of Chicago by midnight, with precipitation continuing into the overnight hours.

Hail constitutes the primary threat on Friday evening, though localized flooding amid heavier showers is possible.

According to the National Weather Service, some western suburbs are at a “marginal” risk of severe weather Friday evening, leaving open the possibility of severe thunderstorm warnings.

Though the NWS identifies a 5% hail risk for parts of the area, including Aurora, Joliet and Naperville, there is a less than a 2% chance of tornadoes and less than a 5% chance of damaging winds.

Chicago-area residents can expect slightly warmer temperatures Saturday, with highs near 60 degrees and mostly cloudy skies.

Blooming in bunches: 4th annual suburban tulip festival scheduled to open in April

As April approaches, Illinois is beginning to show its colors once again: Reds, yellows, purples and more will fill tulip fields throughout the state this spring.

Richardson Farm, located at 909 English Prairie Rd. in Spring Grove, will host their fourth annual tulip festival this spring. While the festival date will depend on the weather, event organizers expect the festival to open in late April.

“While the best guess right now is April 25, exactly when the fest will open is always weather-dependent,” a press release said. “Certain number of above-40-degree days are needed to bring the flowers into bloom.”

This is the first year there will be daffodils at the event as well, the release said. There were 50,000 daffodil bulbs planted last fall with the 350,000 tulip bulbs of over 40 varieties.

“It’s spectacular,” George Richardson, an operator of the farm, said. “It’s that first ‘wow’ pop of colors of springtime.”

The festival will host live music, food trucks, outdoor games, flower field access and a wine tasting bar, organizers said. Once open, the festival expects to be open from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

Tickets prices are $16 per person on Tuesdays through Fridays. Saturdays and Sundays are $19 for those 13 and older, and $16 for those ages 4 through 12. Ages 3 and younger are admitted free.

Each ticketholder can also receive one free tulip when they visit.

Betting on March Madness? Don't forget to report your winnings to the IRS

If you make bets on the March Madness college basketball tournament, don’t spend all of your winnings right away.

That’s because the Internal Revenue Service considers all money made from gambling to be taxable income, which means that anywhere between 10% and 37% of the winnings will be owed as taxes, depending on your tax bracket. Some states also take a cut of roughly 3% to 10% too.

Of course, if you don’t know this ahead of time, you could spend all the money only to be forced to pay some of it back when you file your 2024 tax return.

And if you’re thinking about not reporting the winnings, the IRS has ways of finding out — even for casual bets between friends.

Here’s a look at how gambling proceeds are taxed, and what you need to know to protect yourself in case of an audit.

You need to track your winnings and losses

Gambling websites and apps will typically send you a W-2G form — a record of your earnings — if you win more than $600. A copy of this form is sent to the IRS too, which means it will have a record of your winning bet.

But companies don’t always send those forms. Even so, you’re still responsible for tracking all of your gambling income, whether you receive a form or not. This includes winnings of less than $600.

Fortunately, gambling sites and apps often have a downloadable record of your transactions. Otherwise, the IRS recommends keeping “an accurate diary or similar record of your gambling winnings and losses,” as well as receipts, tickets, statements or other records to support your claims in case of an IRS audit.

How to report your winnings and losses

Your gambling winnings and losses are reported separately on your tax return. The winnings you claim as income include the cost of gambling, or the original wager or bet, says Romeo Razi, a certified public accountant based in Las Vegas.

Of course, you didn’t “win” your wager, but it’s included as gross winnings because that’s how it’s reported on the W-2G forms, he says.

Winnings are added as “gambling income” on line 8 of your Form 1040, Schedule 1, although these forms are filled out automatically by tax software based on your answers to a questionnaire.

Unfortunately, reporting gambling losses isn’t convenient for most people. Gambling losses can only be deducted as an itemized deduction, and they can’t exceed the winnings you report as income.

The reason for that “is to prevent tax filers from offsetting other income with gambling losses,” says Razi, a former revenue agent at the IRS. However, you can claim initial wagers as a loss.

Instead of itemizing, nine out of 10 people take the standard deduction, since it’s a generous $14,600 for single filers and $29,200 for those married filing jointly for 2024. For most people, itemizing gambling losses won’t save you as much money as simply taking the standard deduction. That means you can’t claim gambling losses.

What happens if you don’t report your gambling winnings

By not reporting all your gambling winnings, you’re violating the law. The IRS can uncover discrepancies by comparing your income with the W-2G forms they receive or by examining your bank deposit activity.

A 20% penalty can be applied if the total underreported amount is more than $5,000 or 10% of your actual tax liability — whichever is greater. For larger sums, you risk jail time.

More casual gambling that doesn’t involve W-2G forms, like fantasy football pools between friends, is less noticed by the IRS. But large cash deposits between friends can still trigger an audit. For that reason, you should report everything.

IDOT warns of ‘heavy' traffic across Illinois for total solar eclipse; crowds of up to 200,000 in path of totality

The Illinois Department of Transportation is warning of heavy traffic across the state — especially in southern Illinois, near Carbondale — when a total solar eclipse takes place on April 8.

“The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible over approximately 128 miles of Illinois April 8,” IDOT said in a post. “Totality enters Illinois as it crosses the Missouri state line southwest in Carbondale at 1:58 p.m. The eclipse will follow a diagonal line crossing over Fairfield and exit Illinois at Mount Carmel at 2:06 p.m.”

In the Chicago area, approximately 95% of the solar eclipse will be visible. And while many will be able to see a partial version of the eclipse in Northern Illinois, hundreds of thousands are expected to travel downstate and chase the eclipse’s path, resulting in potential traffic impacts.

MORE: Schools across Illinois, Indiana announce closures for rare solar eclipse

“Crowds of 100,000 to 200,000 are expected to come to the prime viewing area in southern Illinois,” the agency warned. “All roads in and out of the area are expected to have heavy congestion in the couple hours after the eclipse.”

IDOT noted that I-57, which travels from Chicago to the southern tip of the state, is the direct interstate with access to the path of totality. U.S. 45 runs through the middle of the path of totality, and Illinois 1 and Interstates 64 and 70 will also provide access IDOT said.

“Prepare for traffic congestion before, during and after the eclipse,” the agency warned, adding that it expects heavy traffic on rural roads, interstates and major highways leading to and from Chicago, St. Louis and other cities.

MORE: ‘Stay home,’ Ohio town in total solar eclipse path of totality tells residents, as influx of visitors expected

Experts also warned people to turn on their headlights if driving during the event.

“Even though it’s a partial eclipse over Chicago, the skies are still going to get darker, with more than 90% of the sun getting covered,” NBC 5 Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said. In the eclipse’s path of totality, skies were expected to get “much darker,” Jeanes said.

Those in Midwest who are traveling during the eclipse are encouraged to hit the road with a full tank of gas, a charged phone and bottled water. IDOT also warned drivers to be cautious, as “a large number of pedestrians” were expected to be near roads.

“If you’re in a vehicle, don’t stop along roads or bridges,” the agency said.

And while many parts of Illinois will need eclipse glasses to view the spectacle safely, IDOT warned against wearing them while driving, as they block out almost all visible light.

“Don’t ever take photos, videos, or wear ‘eclipse glasses’ while driving,” the agency stressed.

Authorities searched Diddy's properties in sex trafficking probe. Here's what to know

In the first nine months of 2023, Sean “Diddy” Combs triumphantly performed at the MTV VMAs, released an R&B album that garnered a Grammy nomination and was a suitor to buy the BET network.

But several lawsuits filed late last year raised allegations of sexual assault and rape against Combs — one of hip-hop’s most recognizable names as a performer and producer.

The music mogul’s homes in Los Angeles and Miami were searched Monday by federal agents with Homeland Security Investigators and other law enforcement. Officials said the searches were connected to an investigation by federal authorities in New York.

Footage from Chopper 6 showed multiple agents at the rapper’s property on the exclusive Star Island. NBC6 captured agents walking through the more than $30 million home with paper bags and walking out with multiple boxes and laptops. Among the items seized were several phones and guns, law enforcement sources told NBC News.

In a statement on Tuesday, Combs’ attorney called the raid an “unprecedented ambush” and that the mogul was not detained but cooperated and spoke to authorities.

“Yesterday, there was a gross overuse of military-level force as search warrants were executed at Mr. Combs’ residences. There is no excuse for the excessive show of force and hostility exhibited by authorities or the way his children and employees were treated,” Aaron Dyer’s statement said in part.

The attorney clarified that Combs nor any of his family members were not arrested and their travel was not restricted.

“This unprecedented ambush — paired with an advanced, coordinated media presence — leads to a premature rush to judgment of Mr. Combs and is nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits,” Dyer said. “There has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations. Mr. Combs is innocent and will continue to fight every single day to clear his name.”

Although Diddy was embroiled in one high-profile business dispute for part of 2023, it was a case filed by his former girlfriend and R&B singer Cassie that opened the door to other claims of sexual violence. Combs has vehemently denied the allegations.

It is not clear whether the search is related to any of the allegations raised in the lawsuits, which include one from a woman who claims Combs raped her when she was 17.

Here are some things to know about Combs and the investigation.

WHO IS DIDDY?

Combs is among the most influential hip-hop producers and executives of the past three decades. He built one of music’s biggest empires, blazing a trail with several entities attached to his famous name. He is the founder of Bad Boy Records and a three-time Grammy winner who has worked with a slew of top-tier artists including Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, Usher, Lil Kim, Faith Evans and 112.

The music mogul created the fashion clothing line called Sean John, was associated with a well-known vodka brand and launched Revolt TV network, which focuses on music and social justice issues targeting African Americans. He also produced the reality show “Making the Band” for MTV.

In 2022, BET honored Combs with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his ability to shape culture through his career.

Combs won Grammys for his platinum-selling 1997 album “No Way Out” and the single “I’ll Be Missing You,” a song dedicated to the late Notorious B.I.G. who was killed earlier that year. He won another Grammy for “Shake Ya Tailfeather” with Nelly and Murphy Lee.

Last year, Combs released his fifth studio album “The Love Album: Off the Grid,” which was nominated for best progressive R&B album at February’s Grammy Awards, which he did not attend. The album was his first solo project since his 2006 chart-topping “Press Play,” which had two top 10 hit singles: “Last Night” with Keyshia Cole and “Come to Me” featuring Nicole Scherzinger.

In 2004, Combs played Walter Lee Younger in the Broadway revival of “A Raisin in the Sun,” which aired as a television adaption four years later. He’s also appeared in films including “Get Him to the Greek” and “Monster’s Ball.”

WHAT SPARKED THE LAWSUITS?

In November, Combs’ protege and singer Cassie sued him for alleging years of sexual abuse including rape. The lawsuit alleged he forced her to have sex with male prostitutes while he filmed them.

Combs and Ventura began dating in 2007 and had an on-and-off relationship for more than a decade.

The suit was settled the day after it was filed, but the lawsuits against Combs kept coming.

Combs had said in a December statement, “I did not do any of the awful things being alleged.”

In February, a music producer filed a lawsuit alleging Combs coerced him to solicit prostitutes and pressured him to have sex with them. Combs’ attorney Shawn Holley has said of those allegations that “we have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies.”

Another of Combs’ accusers was a woman who said the rap producer raped her two decades ago when she was 17.

The filings detail acts of sexual assault, beatings and forced drugging allegedly committed in the early 1990s by Combs, then a talent director, party promoter and rising figure in New York City’s hip-hop community.

ANY REPERCUSSIONS FROM THE LAWSUITS?

Last year, Combs stepped down as chairman of his cable television network Revolt amid the sexual abuse allegations against him.

Revolt announced Combs’ decision via social media. It’s not clear if he will ever return to the media company — which said Combs previously had “no operational or day-to-day role” at the network.

“This decision helps to ensure that Revolt remains steadfastly focused on our mission to create meaningful content for the culture and amplify the voices of all Black people throughout this country and African diaspora,” the network said.

The network had been preparing to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Combs also created an online marketplace called Empower Global that featured Black-owned brands. The website for the curated marketplace is still active, but shows no products being sold.

WHAT HAPPENED WITH DIAGEO?

Earlier this year, Combs withdrew the lawsuit filed last year against Diageo as part of a settlement with the London-based spirits giant.

Combs said the company didn’t make promised investments in Ciroc vodka and DeLeon tequila — two brands Combs promoted in the past — and treated them as inferior “urban” products. He also accused Diageo of racism.

In court filings, Combs said Diageo leadership told him race was one of the reasons it limited distribution to “urban” neighborhoods. Combs said he was also told some Diageo leaders resented him for making too much money.

In legal filings, Diageo accused Combs of resorting to “false and reckless” allegations “in an effort to extract additional billions” from the company.

Combs’ reputation took a serious hit after the lawsuit was filed. Diageo became the sole owner of Ciroc and DeLeon after the lawsuit was withdrawn.

Video shows collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge

Stunning video shows the moment a ship rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, early Tuesday and sent the bridge plunging into the Patapsco River.

The video shows the ship approach the bridge near one of its supports. The vessel’s lights appear to go dark as it nears the bridge before appearing to flicker back on moments before the collision. Suddenly, the ship appears to hit the bridge’s support and a cloud of black smoke rises. Within seconds, parts of the huge steel bridge snap and crumple into the river.

“The entire bridge, the entire Key Bridge, is in the water,” an official could be heard saying on a radio transmission to the Baltimore Fire Department.

‘Unthinkable tragedy’

The search for several missing people stretched into late Tuesday.

Mayor Brandon Scott called the bridge collapse an “unthinkable tragedy.”

“Never would you think that you would see physically see the Key Bridge tumble down like that. It looked like something out of an action movie,” he said.

Sonar indicated there were vehicles in the water, where the temperature was about 47 degrees in the early hours of Tuesday, according to a buoy that collects data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Ship issued ‘mayday’ before collision

The ship’s crash into the bridge appears to be an accident, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said at a news conference.

“We haven’t seen any evidence of a terrorist attack,” he said.

Synergy Marine Group — which owns and manages the ship called the “Dali” — confirmed the vessel hit a pillar of the bridge at about 1:30 a.m. while two pilots were in control. It said all crew members, including the pilots, were accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries.

The Dali was headed from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and flying under a Singapore flag, according to data from Marine Traffic. The container ship is about 985 feet long and about 157 feet wide, according to the website.

From a vantage point near the entrance to the bridge, jagged remnants of its steel frame were visible protruding from the water, with the on-ramp ending abruptly where the span once began.

Danish shipping giant Maersk said it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying its customers’ cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were on board.

Massive Wilmette Wayfair store set to open this spring

A giant, purple Wayfair store will soon open in Wilmette.

According to a spokesperson, the Wayfair store planned for Edens Plaza in Wilmette is scheduled to open in May. Developers had previously announced the store, which will fill the vacant, two-story building the formerly housed Carson Pirie Scott, would open its doors in mid-2023.

The 150,000 square-foot store, at 3232 Lake Ave., will be Wayfair’s first “large-format” store, the spokesperson said, adding that it will soon hire for approximately 200 positions.

The store will have “immersive and interactive experiences,” the home goods website said, with 19 departments ranging from furniture, to décor, to outdoor and home improvement. It will also have an in-store restaurant.

Wayfair currently has a warehouse location in Romeoville, the spokesperson said, adding that customers at the Wilmette store will be able to take “certain” items home from the store after purchase. Others would be delivered.

In 2023, Wayfair specialty brand Joss & Main opened its first brick-and-mortar store at Oak Brook Center. Wayfair also operates brick-and-mortar Joss & Main, Birch Lane and AllModern stores in other locations, including Massachusetts, Texas and Florida, the spokesperson said. Those stores are significantly smaller than the planned Wilmette store, the spokesperson said, noting that specialty brand stores range in size from 8,000 to 15,000 square feet.

Development and construction on the space in Wilmette began in 2022. Previously released renderings of the new store show a patio with umbrellas and tables, greenery and more.

Chick-fil-A ending ‘no antibiotics ever' pledge for its chicken due to expected supply shortage

The fast-food chain Chick-fil-A backtracked from its decade-old “no antibiotics ever” pledge intended to help prevent human antibiotic resistance linked to the rampant use of the drugs in livestock production.

Instead, the company said in a statement that it will embrace a standard known as “no antibiotics important to human medicine,” often abbreviated as NAIHM, which entails the avoidance of medications commonly used to treat people and limits the use of animal antibiotics to cases of actual animal illness.

Livestock producers have long used antibiotics to boost rapid weight gain in animals such as chickens, pigs, cows and sheep, improving the profitability of their businesses. Over the past decade, however, many nations, including the United States, have begun to restrict the practice as evidence mounted that it was contributing to drug resistance and reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics against disease in humans.

Chick-fil-A said it will begin shifting to the new policy in the spring of 2024. A company spokesman added that the move reflects company concerns about its ability to acquire sufficient supplies of antibiotic-free chicken. One of the poultry industry’s largest companies, Tyson Foods, said last year that it was reintroducing some antibiotics to its chicken production and removing its “No Antibiotics Ever” package labeling. It began to eliminate antibiotics from some of its poultry production in 2015.

In a May 2023 video featured on the Tyson Foods YouTube channel, Tyson’s senior director of animal welfare, Karen Christensen, described the shift as “based on scientific research and industry learnings.” She noted that Tyson planned to begin using antibiotics known as ionophores, which don’t play a role in human medicine, to “improve the overall health and welfare of the birds in our care.” Ionophores have long been used to promote growth in livestock.
