How Nicole Kidman really feels about Keith Urban separation

Originally appeared on E! Online

It looks like Nicole Kidman hoped she and Keith Urban could get back to being the perfect couple.

Shortly after confirming the Oscar winner and country singer broke up following 20 years together, E! News learned that the pair’s decision to separate was one-sided.

Indeed, E! learned that Kidman did not want to part ways with Urban and has been trying to save the marriage since they opted to live apart in the beginning of the summer.

And those aren’t the only details that have been revealed about the duo’s breakup. E! also learned that, amid their separation, Kidman has been taking care of their daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, in their shared Nashville home, while Urban resides in a separate residence in the same city. He’s currently on tour and will next perform in Hershey, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 2.

E! reached out to reps of Kidman and Urban for comment.

Three months before news of their breakup was made public, Kidman, 58, celebrated 19 years of marriage with Urban, 57, whom she tied the knot with in 2006 following one year of dating.

Alongside a photo of her cozied up with the “Somebody Like You” singer with his guitar on his lap, she captioned a June 25 Instagram post, “Happy Anniversary Baby.”

One month later, E! learned that Kidman — who is also mom to kids Bella, 32, and Connor, 30, with ex-husband Tom Cruise — had put in an application to become a resident of Portugal but had not listed Urban on the form.

However, a source with knowledge of the situation told E! that his absence from the application was due to scheduling conflicts.

“Keith was unable to be in Portugal for this appointment as he is currently on tour in the U.S.,” the source said at the time, “and it is mandatory for applicants to be physically present in order to apply for the visa. He is scheduled to submit his application at a later date that works with his tour schedule.”

And while Urban and Kidman have yet to speak publicly on why they called it quits, they have previously provided insight into why they fell in love with each other when they met in 2005.

As Urban put it during a 2020 appearance on Dax Shephard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, “She’s the one that I was searching for my whole life.”

For Kidman’s part, she knew she wanted to walk down the aisle with the musician after he surprised her with flowers for her 38th birthday a few months into dating.

She told People in 2019, “I believed by that point he was the love of my life.”

Matthew Boyd named Game 1 starter for Cubs vs. Padres

The Department of Homeland Security sent a memo to the Department of War, requesting 100 military personnel to be sent to Illinois “claiming a need for protection of ICE personnel and facilities,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Monday.

The governor held a news conference after Border Patrol agents, some of whom were carrying rifles and wearing bulletproof vests, began patrolling prominent streets in downtown Chicago over the weekend.

“What I have been warning of is now being realized,” Pritzker said at a news briefing.

Protests at a processing facility in suburban Broadview escalated in recent days, sparking headlines nationwide, as multiple arrests were made and tear gas was deployed against demonstrators.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Saturday that she is sending more federal troops to ICE facilities around the country.

“If you so much as touch one of our federal officers, you will go to prison,” she said.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News on Sunday, the president indicated that he is still considering sending armed National Guard troops into Chicago.

“Any place where there is big trouble, we want to go and help out,” he said, calling Chicago a “crime-ridden mess.”

Trump also said his administration sent additional FBI resources to the city earlier this year on an “information gathering mission.” He claimed credit for reductions in crime, though there is no available data tying reduced crime to the presence of FBI agents.

Late last month, Pritzker delivered a strongly worded message, warning the president not to come to Chicago, following his threats to deploy the National Guard.

President Donald Trump reposted videos showing agents in Chicago this weekend, but has yet to make a public statement on their presence.

Hundreds of people in the city and suburbs have been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in recent weeks as part of a ramped-up effort to deport more individuals who the Trump administration called “criminal illegal aliens.”

New DMV opens in Chicago suburb with more services, expanded hours

A new DMV opened in a Chicago suburb Monday, offering extended hours and “expanded services,” according to the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

The new, appointment-only location opened at 18230 Orland Parkway in Orland Park on Monday and “offers everything from driver’s services like driver license renewals and REAL IDs to vehicle services like vehicle registration and renewal stickers.” It will also have behind-the-wheel driving exams, marking a first for the suburb.

The new hours for the facility will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The opening comes roughly two months after township trustees voted to abruptly terminate the lease for the only DMV office in the area.

“Orland Park is a busy full-service DMV that gives residents and those in neighboring communities the ability to easily cross tasks, like driver’s license or vehicle registration renewals, off the list,” Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said in a statement. “That’s why we made it a top priority to not only ensure that residents didn’t experience any disruption in services but also expanded the hours and added additional services at no cost to state or local taxpayers.”

Giannoulias’ office said it signed a one-year, zero-cost lease with the non-profit Communities Transform Futures (CTF) to open the temporary location.

After the controversial vote to close of the previous DMV office in Orland Park was met with strong criticism in June, the village said it contacted the Illinois Secretary of State’s office to share community concerns and “to advocate for the swift remedy to the possible ceasing of services in the community.”

“We know how important it is for our residents to have essential services close to home,” said Mayor Jim Dodge. “When it became clear the Orland Township site would be closing, we worked quickly with our partners to make sure the Drivers Facility stayed right here in our Village. I want to thank Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, CTF Illinois, Supervisor Paul O’Grady, and Senator Michael Hastings for their teamwork in ensuring residents continue to have reliable, local access to these vital services.”

The previous DMV office was given until Oct. 31 to vacate the space after the township trustees voted to end the lease, so Monday’s opening of the new location will ensure residents in the area have access to a local facility at least until the end of the temporary location’s lease next year.

The Secretary of State’s office is continuing to seek a permanent location nearby before the expiration of the lease, according to the announcement.

“The new temporary and eventual permanent facilities will provide a full range of services, including driver’s license renewals, driving tests, and vehicle registration,” the village said.

Man attacked after he tried to stop a robbery Saturday night in the Loop

The Athletics’ threads will look different at times during the 2026 MLB season.

The A’s revealed their new “Sacramento” alternate jersey on Sunday before the 2025 series finale against the Kansas City Royals at Sutter Health Park.

The jersey, according to the team, is designed to “pay tribute to the club’s interim home in the Capital Region and offers a modern take on the Athletics’ iconic gold.”

“Sacramento has welcomed the Athletics with incredible passion and support. The new ‘SACRAMENTO’ jersey is our way of recognizing that support and saying thank you to the fans, businesses, and community leaders who helped bring Major League Baseball to town,” A’s president Marc Badain wrote in a statement. “It’s been an unforgettable first season in West Sacramento, and this uniform is another way to celebrate the passion we’ve already felt throughout the community.”

In addition to its on-field use, the Athletics’ new jersey also will “anchor special theme nights and community initiatives throughout the year, including Sacramento Saturdays.”

All fans attending the April 4, 2026 game against the Houston Astros will receive a replica jersey.

Merchandise featuring the new design will be available at the A’s team store and online during the 2026 season.

Once defiant, New York Mayor Eric Adams now says he's dropping out of race

Eric Adams will stay a one-term mayor after suspending his re-election campaign, an effort delayed by allegations of bribery that denied him public funds and rarely saw him advancing past fourth place in a number of primary polls.

Adams, a former NYPD captain turned Brooklyn politician, announced his decision to suspend the campaign in a pre-recorded video message released across his social media channels on Sunday, with only five weeks to go until Election Day. He’ll be the first one-term mayor since David Dinkins, the first Black man to be elected to lead New York City.

“Despite all we’ve achieved, I cannot continue my re-election campaign,” Adams said. “The constant media speculation about my future and the campaign finance board’s decision to withhold millions of dollars have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for a serious campaign.”

“Although this is the end of my re-election campaign, it is not the end of my public service. I will continue to fight for this city, as I have for 40 years since the day I joined the NYPD to make our streets safer and our systems fairer,” he said.

Read his full statement here.

The final weeks of his bid for a potential second term as mayor of New York City were overshadowed by rumors of job offers and off-the-record conversations about how long to remain in the race. Widespread reporting suggested the Trump administration, among others, wanted Adams out in order to clear a better path for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo to defeat the mayor.

Despite those reports, Adams declared his unwavering love of the city and his insistence that no distraction would pull him from the race. That defiance, however, softened in the past week as he appeared nearly absent on the campaign trail and signaled a willingness to make the “right decision for the city.”

After opting to avoid the Democratic primary race altogether, Adams’ campaign failed to grab a hold of any momentum that would put him in serious contention with the party’s nominee, Zohran Mamdani.

Adams’ campaign was deeply wounded when he was indicted on corruption charges last year, then developed a warm relationship with Trump that bothered many Democrats in one of the country’s most liberal cities. There was further backlash from Democrats after the Justice Department said it was dropping the case so that Adams could assist with Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Adams’ exit from the mayoral race ostensibly makes the election a three-man competition between Mamdani, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, and Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing in the Democratic primary. The mayor’s name, however, will remain on the ballot come Election Day since he exited after the deadline to print them.

The political rivals still in the race shared statements following the news of Adams’ announcement.

“Donald Trump and his billionaire donors might be able to determine Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo’s actions but they will not dictate the results of this election. New York deserves better than trading in one disgraced, corrupt politician for another. On November 4th, we are going to turn the page on the politics of big money and small ideas and deliver a government every New Yorker can be proud of,” Zohran Mamdani said in a statement.

“Curtis Sliwa is the only candidate who can defeat Mamdani. Our team, our resources, and our funding are unmatched. Most importantly, we have the best solutions to help working people afford to stay in New York City and feel safe,” a spokesperson for the Republican said.

Rev. Al Sharpton, who has been a friend and ally of the mayor for more than three decades, reacted to the news Sunday afternoon.

“Mayor Adams informed me earlier today that he would not seek re-election, and I told him I respected his decision, wished him nothing but the best,” Sharpton said in a statement. “We have been friends for nearly 35 years, and he helped us establish National Action Network in 1991. He has been a friend of NAN year in and year out since, especially over the last almost four years he led City Hall.”

Adams is expected to finish out his term at the end of the year. He won as a Democrat four years ago, in 2021, after serving as the Brooklyn borough president.

The mayor surprised many New Yorkers by sitting out the Democratic primary in June and instead running as an independent. His political side-step followed significant attention after a September 2024 indictment by the federal government over charges of bribery and campaign finance violations. Federal prosecutors alleged he “used his prominent positions in New York City government to obtain illegal campaign contributions and luxury travel.”

Game times set for Padres vs. Cubs wild card series

Major League Baseball has set the schedule for the first two games of the Wild Card Series this week, including for the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres.

The series between the Cubs and Padres, the only one of the four series currently set as the MLB season hits its final day, will start at Wrigley Field on Tuesday and will be a best-of-three series to determine who will face the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series.

According to Major League Baseball, both Games 1 and 2 between the Cubs and Padres will begin at 2:08 p.m. Central time on Tuesday and Wednesday. The league also announced that both games will air nationally on ABC.

Game 3 of the series, if necessary, would be played on Thursday. A start time has not yet been determined.

The Cubs earned home-field advantage in the wild card round with their win on Saturday over the St. Louis Cardinals. They have played the Padres in one other postseason series, with San Diego capturing the 1984 National League Championship Series in five games.

The Cubs have not yet announced who will be their starting pitcher for Game 1 of the series, with Cade Horton going on the injured list this week with a broken rib. It is expected that Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon or Collin Rea will make the start in the first two games of the wild card series.

If the Cubs can advance out of that series, they will take on the Brewers beginning Saturday at Milwaukee’s American Family Field. They have never faced the Brewers in the postseason, though Milwaukee did win a one-game tiebreaker over the Cubs in 2018 to capture the National League Central crown.

The other three series will also take place Tuesday through Thursday. The two American League series will begin at 12:08 p.m. and 5:08 p.m. Central time, and those games will air on ESPN.

Currently, two of the three division titles remain up for grabs, with only the Seattle Mariners having locked up their crown. They will receive a bye into the American League Division Series as the No. 2 seed.

The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees are tied atop the American League East, with the Blue Jays holding the tiebreaker. They will play the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, with a win guaranteeing them the top seed in the American League and a bye into the division series.

The second place team from the East will earn the top wild card spot and will host a wild card round series beginning Tuesday.

In the American League Central, the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers remain tied for the top spot, with the Guardians holding the tiebreaker. If they can win their game Sunday, they would capture the division crown and would host the wild card series in Cleveland beginning Tuesday.

The Boston Red Sox also need a win to lock up the second wild card spot in the American League.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, the winners of the National League West Division, will take on either the Cincinnati Reds or New York Mets beginning at 8:08 p.m. Tuesday in Game 1, with that game airing on ESPN.

The Reds hold a tiebreaker over the Mets entering the final game of the regular season, meaning a win over the Brewers would guarantee them a playoff berth. The Mets are taking on the Miami Marlins in their season finale.

Nearly 200,000 BMWs recalled over potential fire risk

The Chicago Cubs placed Cade Horton on the 15-day injured list on Saturday, sidelining the right-hander for their first-round playoff series against San Diego.

Horton, one of the leading contenders for NL Rookie of the Year, has a right rib fracture. The IL move was made retroactive to Thursday.

The loss of Horton is a big blow for Chicago going into its first postseason appearance since 2020. The 24-year-old Horton, a first-round pick in the 2022 amateur draft, is 8-1 with a sparkling 1.03 ERA in 12 starts since the All-Star break.

Horton threw on the field before the Cubs’ game against St. Louis on Saturday. He was slated to throw a bullpen session Sunday before the IL move was announced.

Horton pitched three innings against the New York Mets on Tuesday before departing because of back tightness. He was sick after his previous start and was coughing, leading to issues with his back and ribs, manager Craig Counsell said.

Horton was “on track still,” but an MRI showed “some areas of concern” in the ribs, Counsell said Thursday.

Going into Saturday’s action, Chicago had a magic number of one for clinching the top NL wild card and home-field advantage in the first round. The Cubs and Padres play Game 1 of their best-of-three series on Tuesday.

Horton is 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA in 22 starts and one relief appearance.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled left-hander Jordan Wicks from Triple-A Iowa. Wicks is 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA in seven appearances with Chicago this season.

Chicago bookstore named among the ‘Nicest Places in America 2025'

A Chicago establishment described as “so much more than a bookstore” was named among America’s “nicest” places by a nationwide magazine.

Reader’s Digest unveiled the five winners of its “Nicest Places in America 2025,” and among them was Semicolon Books in the city’s West Town neighborhood. Founded by art curator and book lover, DL Moore, the bookstore “was created as a safe space for readers who enjoy stories by and about minority authors,” according to its website.

According to a Reader’s Digest article about the bookshop, Moore hopes customers will consider the store a “third space” — some place that’s not home or work that “still feels like a place for belonging.”

Through her work, the bookstore’s owner has focused on both providing a welcoming space for the community and giving back.

As part of the shop’s #ClearTheShelves program, Moore welcomes classes and allows students to pick out whatever they would like – for free. Since its founding, Semicolon has given 13,000 books to Chicago Public Schools students.

Moore came up with the name “Semicolon,” after she was diagnosed with ocular melanoma in 2019.

According to the article, Moore was a museum curator at the time, constantly flying for work, and chemo would keep her grounded.

“A semicolon is where an author could stop the sentence but chooses not to. So it was kind of a space for me to figure out a way to still make life enjoyable,” she explained.

Moore has faced other setbacks as well.

Her car was stolen on Labor Day weekend of last year, the bookshop’s checkbook was taken, and her account was hacked. Moore had to shut down the store four months later.

She shared the news on Instagram, which prompted an outpouring of support.

“Your work and impact on your community will stand for generations,” one stated.

“I owe so much of my inspiration, dream and aspirations to y’all,” another said.

To her customers’ delight, Moore’s bookshop held its grand reopening on Juneteenth.

You might be wondering – what makes the bookstore one of the “Nicest Places in America?”

The annual list is defined by “communities where kindness thrives, differences are embraced and people come together to make life better for everyone.” This year, Asheville, North Carolina, claimed the top spot for its “extraordinary resilience and unwavering commitment to community.”

Huge plume of smoke visible from I-90 billows from fire on Chicago's South Side

A new DMV facility is coming to suburban Orland Park, the village announced Friday.

The facility will begin serving customers at 11:30 a.m. Monday, after a press conference at 10:30 a.m. celebrating the opening of the office, located at CTF Illinois, 18230 Orland Parkway.

The opening comes roughly two months after township trustees voted to abruptly terminate the lease for the only DMV office in the area.

The new location will be larger and offer expanded hours and additional services, including appointments for road exams.

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office said it signed a one-year, zero-cost lease with the non-profit Communities Transform Futures (CTF) to open the temporary location.

“The Secretary of State’s Office had to scramble to quickly find a temporary location to ensure uninterrupted access to essential services for residents,” the Village of Orland Park said in a statement Friday.

The Secretary of State’s office is continuing to seek a permanent location nearby before the expiration of the lease, according to the announcement.

“The new temporary and eventual permanent facilities will provide a full range of services, including driver’s license renewals, driving tests, and vehicle registration,” the village said.

Live updates: Sinclair will resume airing Kimmel; Netanyahu speaks at U.N.

Video of an apparent immigration arrest Wednesday morning in Prince George’s County, Maryland, raised new concerns in the community.

Professional photographer Raphi Talisman’s video shows officers detaining a man at the business intersection of Hamilton Street and Queens Chapel Road in Hyattsville. Officers are seen trying to handcuff a man on the ground. At one point, an officer’s gun dropped to the ground, and he lunged to pick it up and appeared to point it.

Talisman had dropped his child off at school just before 8:30 a.m. when he saw what was happening and started to record.

“It could have gotten way out of control very quickly,” he said. “It was such a dangerous situation.”

Drivers honked their horns, and some yelled at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers as they struggled to put the man in handcuffs.

The detainee’s cries were heartbreaking, Talisman said.

“I love America,” the detainee is heard saying on video showing two officers holding him down.

“The real thing was the brutality of it all. It’s disgusting,” Talisman said.

The video spread on social media.

Prince George’s County Council member Wanika Fisher said she was angered and saddened by it. She emphasized county police do not work with ICE in making arrests.

“I don’t think it’s something that we accept,” she said, “and I think filming interactions like that show the community what their federal government is doing in this constant dog and pony show. I think it’s important to bring awareness to our community.”

The arrest was in an area with a diverse population and several popular Hispanic businesses and restaurants. State Del. Deni Taveras, D-Prince George’s County, said the incident makes some fearful to go out and support those businesses.

“This administration is not creating a safe environment,” she said. “We feel very afraid for our lives, literally.

ICE has said officers identify themselves when making arrests and can wear masks to protect their identities.
Police eventually placed the man in handcuffs and put him in a van. It’s unclear why the officers arrested the man or if he’s facing charges.

News4 reached out to ICE but has not received a response.

Talisman said videos like his are spreading awareness of what ICE is doing in the community.

“If ICE is attacking one part of the community, they’re attacking all of us,” he said.

Telemundo 44 spoke to another witness, who said he was scared by the officer holding the gun.

The Department of Homeland Security said Job Arias-Mendoza is from El Salvador, entered the U.S. illegally and had previously been arrested for first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, concealing a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest.

“During the time of arrest, Arias actively resisted federal law enforcement and attempted to bite one of the officers. After he was handcuffed, Arias was found to have multiple knives and drugs in his possession,” DHS said in a statement.

Darren Bailey announces second run for Illinois governor

Officials in Dallas are expected to hold a news conference with the latest on Wednesday morning’s shooting at about 1:30 p.m. CT. The press conference will appear in the video player at the top of this page.

FBI Director Kash Patel released a statement Thursday regarding data and writings found in the home of the suspect involved in the shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas, where a detainee was killed and two others were critically wounded by a gunman who then fatally shot himself.

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Thursday, Patel posted a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying that the FBI has “been working 24/7 to seize devices, exploit data, and process writings obtained on location and in the subject’s person/residence/bedroom.”

According to Patel’s post, the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, downloaded a document titled “Dallas County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management,” which contained a list of DHS facilities.

Jahn also conducted multiple searches of ballistics and the “Charlie Kirk Shot Video” between Sept. 23 and Sept. 24, Patel’s post said. Jahn also allegedly searched for apps that tracked the presence of ICE agents between Aug. 19 and Aug. 24.

Patel’s post stated that one of the handwritten notes recovered read, “Hopefully this will give ICE agents real terror, to think, ‘is there a sniper with AP rounds on that roof?”

Additional evidence found in Jahn’s residence indicated a high degree of pre-attack planning, Patel said.

Patel’s announcement comes one day after Wednesday’s fatal shooting, during which Jahn allegedly began firing “indiscriminately at the ICE building, including at a van in the sallyport,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

The ICE facility is located along Interstate 35 East, just southwest of Dallas Love Field, northwest of downtown.

Three detainees who were inside the van when the shooting began were hit. One was killed and two remain hospitalized in critical condition. Officials said that as many as 10 other detainees in the van were not hurt. No ICE personnel were injured during the shooting.

In the hours following the shooting, Patel posted a photo on social media showing a bullet found at the scene with “ANTI-ICE” written on it. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem ordered more security at ICE facilities across the U.S., according to a post by the DHS on the social platform X.

Wednesday’s attack was the latest high-profile targeted killing in the U.S., coming two weeks after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was killed by a shooter on the roof of a building at Utah Valley University, and as heightened immigration enforcement has prompted backlash against ICE agents and fear in immigrant communities.

Social Security payments will soon change for some recipients. Here's how

Changes are soon coming to how the Social Security Administration issues payments.

According to the agency, paper checks will no longer be issued for benefit payments starting Sept. 30.

“This change is part of a broader government-wide initiative to modernize payment systems and enhance service delivery,” the agency said in an alert to beneficiaries in July. “By moving to electronic payments exclusively, we aim to improve efficiency, security, and ensure beneficiaries receive their monthly benefits promptly.”

The shift will impact anyone who has not yet switched to electronic payment methods, which the Social Security Administration said is less than 1% of beneficiaries. Anyone still receiving paper checks is being urged to enroll in direct deposit or opt for the “Direct Express card” in order to receive their benefits on time.

The move was first announced as part of a March 25 executive order, titled “Modernizing payments to and from America’s bank account.” In it, President Donald Trump directed all federal departments and agencies to stop using paper checks and switch to electronic payments by September, citing “unnecessary costs, delays and risks of fraud lost payments thefts and inefficiencies.”

“Mail theft complaints have increased substantially since the COVID-19 pandemic,” the order said. “Historically, Department of the Treasury checks are 16 times more likely to be reported lost or stolen, returned undeliverable, or altered than an electronic funds transfer (EFT).”

Are you eligible for a stimulus check from the IRS? Deadline to claim approaches

According to finance experts, electronic payments come with benefits, including faster and more secure payments, and a lower cost. NBC 5 Responds reported that it costs approximately $2 to $4 to issue a paper check and then $1 to $2 to receive it, compared to a 50-cent electronic transaction.

The change also comes as a growing list of retailers, including Target and Nordstrom, announced they would no longer accept checks as a form of payment.

Similar moves have been made in years past. In 2011, the U.S. Department of Treasury said anyone newly applying for Social Security, Veterans Affairs or other federal benefits must select an electronic payment method, saying paper checks will “no longer be an option.”

In 2010, the Treasury Department published a final rule to gradually eliminate paper checks for federal benefit payments.

According to Treasury Department, issuing a paper check costs about 50 cents, whereas an electronic funds transfer costs less than 15 cents.

“This shift could save the federal government millions of dollars annually,” the Social Security Administration said.

Those who currently receive checks will need to set up one of the following:

People who currently receive paper checks have two convenient options to receive their Social Security payments electronically:

  • Direct Deposit: Beneficiaries should enroll in direct deposit with their financial institution. Payments can be deposited directly into your checking or savings account.
  • Direct Express® Card: For people without a bank account, the Direct Express card is a prepaid debit card designed specifically for federal benefit payments.

Emma Watson felt it was best to take her broomstick far from Hollywood.

Indeed, although the “Harry Potter” star looks back at her work fondly, she shared insight into stepping away from acting to pursue her doctorate, admitting some aspects of the job ultimately took away from the experience.

“In some ways, I really won the lottery [with acting], and what happened to me is so unusual,” Watson told Hollywood Authentic in an interview published Sept. 21. “But a bigger component than the actual job itself is the promotion and selling of that piece of work, this piece of art. The balance of that can get quite thrown off.”

“I think I’ll be honest and straightforward, and say: I do not miss selling things,” she continued. “I found that to be quite soul-destroying. But I do very much miss using my skill set, and I very much miss the art. I just found I got to do so little of the bit that I actually enjoyed.”

For the 35-year-old — who made her acting debut in 1999 with “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” at age 11 — stepping in front of the camera was “so freeing.”

“The moment you get on a film set, you don’t get very long for rehearsal,” she explained. “But the moment you get to talk through a scene — or I got to prepare and think about how I wanted to do something — and then the minute the camera rolls, and getting to just completely forget about everything else in the world other than that one moment—it’s such an intense form of meditation. Because you just cannot be anywhere else.”

With Watson’s last project being “Little Women” in 2019, she admitted, “I miss that profoundly.”

However, she emphasized, “I don’t miss the pressure. I forgot it was a lot of pressure.”

“I did a small thing for a play, just with my friends,” she added. “I was like, ‘Bloody hell, this is stressful!’ And that wasn’t even for a real public audience or anything. I don’t miss that.”

Although Watson would consider doing something behind the camera, these days the University of Oxford student is focusing on what really matters to her: her loved ones.

“The most important thing, really — or the foundation of your life — is your home and friends and family,” the “Perks of Being a Wallflower” alum reflected. “I think I worked so hard for so long that my life sort of bottomed out. The bottom fell out of the piece, which was actually me and my life.”

“So I needed to go and do some construction work,” she noted. “Some good foundations for anything else to grow from.”

Suspected military ordnance leads to police response at Highland Park preserve

Police have determined that a call of suspected military ordnance in a Highland Park forest preserve was a false alarm Sunday.

According to a press release by Highland Park officials, a resident had spotted what was suspected to be a cannonball or some other type of military ordnance wedged between two rocks near a hiking trail at Fort Sheridan Sunday.

Highland Park police called Waukegan’s bomb squad to the scene, with the United States Air Force also assisting in the investigation.

It was determined that the item was not military ordnance, and an all-clear was given.

According to forest preserve officials, areas that may contain old ordnance are marked by signage, and residents are asked to stay on trails when possible around Fort Sheridan.

“If in the area of Ft. Sheridan, please report items that may be old ordnance to 911 so that they may be properly evaluated and addressed. Do not attempt to handle or disturb unknown items,” officials said.

Nico Hoerner aims for NL batting title, a rare Cubs feat

Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner has been hugely helpful in getting his team to the playoffs, but he’s now aiming for individual acclaim too.

Hoerner, who has set a career high with a 6.2 wins above replacement so far this season, has set his sights even higher, and is hoping to become one of only a handful of Cubs to finish atop the league in a key category.

Entering play Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds, where he’ll bat second and play second base, Hoerner has an even .300 batting average on the season, and he’s one of just two qualified hitters in the National League to be at or above that mark.

As a result, Hoerner trails only Philadelphia’s Trea Turner in the battle for the National League batting title, and he’s aiming to become the first Cubs player in 20 seasons to grab that honor.

The last Cubs player to win the batting title was Derrek Lee, as he slugged his way to a .335 average in his remarkable 2005 season for the Cubs.

While Hoerner has only hit six home runs and driven in 59 RBI’s, Lee’s season was much more productive from a power perspective, as he hammered 46 home runs and drove in 107 RBI’s that season.

Power aside, Hoerner is trying to become just the fifth Cubs player to win the National League batting title since the end of World War II. Bill Buckner finished atop the league in 1980, while Bill Madlock won a pair of batting titles in the 1970s. Billy Williams completes the group of Cubs to hit that milestone.

Hoerner has raised his batting average by 11 points so far this month, batting .371 with a home run and five RBI’s for the Cubs in 70 at-bats this month.

Currently Hoerner is going after a bit of a stationary target, as Turner hasn’t played since Sept. 7 after suffering an injury. There is hope that he could return to the team’s lineup before the end of the regular season, but it’s unknown whether he’ll return to the National League East champions before the conclusion of the campaign.

Hoerner and the Cubs will be in action at 5:40 p.m. Saturday.

Man arrested in Florida, charged with hate crime in Humboldt Park shooting

A fugitive wanted in a Chicago shooting from earlier this summer was arrested and charged this weekend.

According to Chicago police, 59-year-old Jaime Santiago was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service in Kissimmee, Florida on Friday.

Santiago was identified as a suspect who shot and injured an 18-year-old woman in the 2600 block of West Crystal Street on August 24.

According to Chicago police, the suspect got into a verbal altercation with the victim in the case and opened fire, striking her once in the abdomen.

She was hospitalized, according to police. Another 19-year-old woman who was present at the time of the shooting was also targeted, but was not struck by gunfire.

Santiago was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting, and is also facing two felony hate crime charges in the case.

No further information was immediately available.

Illinois vs. Indiana set to take center stage as undefeated Big Ten teams battle

An armed man posing as law enforcement was detained at an Arizona stadium where a memorial service for Charlie Kirk is set to take place on Sunday, the Secret Service said.

The man entered State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Friday and was “exhibiting suspicious” behavior, a Secret Service spokesperson said in a statement Saturday. The spokesperson added that the man, whose name the agency did not reveal, was posing as law enforcement and was armed.

“The individual is not a member of authorized law enforcement working the event and is currently in custody,” the spokesperson said. “The U.S. Secret Service and local law enforcement are investigating the circumstances as to why he was at the location.”

The memorial service for Kirk is expected to draw a massive audience, which will include President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other elected officials.

Kirk, a conservative activist with a popular podcast, “The Charlie Kirk Show,” was assassinated this month while speaking at an event at a college campus in Utah. He was 31 years old and left behind a wife and two children.

His murder followed a series of political acts of violence in the United States in the last year, including the assassinations of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in their home, and of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on the streets of New York City. Trump also faced two assassination attempts while campaigning for the presidency last year.

Kirk’s assassination has done little to quell charged political rhetoric that has gripped the nation for the better part of a decade.

Social media has arguably become even more of a cesspool of hate since the Sept. 10 attack, with extremists flooding news feeds with celebrations Kirk’s killing and others are calling for civil war.
