Bulls coach Billy Donovan updates an ‘extremely bored’ Zach LaVine

The All-Star guard missed his third game while in the NBA’s health and safety protocol, and his coach hopes to have a more general timetable on LaVine’s return when the team gets back home later this week.

The PlayStation 5 needs to start treating Zach LaVine better these days.

At least that’s how it sounded on Monday, as Bulls coach Billy Donovan was asked for an update on the guard.

“Well, one thing I can tell ya, just in my dialogue from him, he’s extremely bored right now.’’ Donovan said of his recent discussions with LaVine, who is an avid game. “That came across loud and clear.’’

The All-Star missed his third straight game, still in the NBA’s health and safety protocol, after the Sun-Times reported that he had a positive test for the coronavirus.

He was obviously ruled out of the rest of this trip, but as far as how many games LaVine will miss? There was still no timetable that Donovan and his medical staff were working off of.

“I think that whatever he has to fulfill inside the NBA and their protocols and their league protocols, we’ll have to follow,’’ Donovan said. “The medical is dealing with that, with him, and the league. And so I think because we’ve been out of town and left, he’s obviously back home right now in Chicago. And I’m not really quite sure what the next steps will be for him.’’

After playing in Cleveland on Wednesday and then returning home for a quick stop at the United Center and hosting Charlotte, the Bulls will be right back on the road with two in Miami and then a game in New York.

LaVine could always fly out and meet the team on the road, but considering the testing he has to go through, and then the cardiac screening he also has to pass, as well as just getting his legs back under him, LaVine could realistically miss at least eight total games.

“Hopefully we’ll find out more from the league and from our medical staff about the next steps that we need to take,’’ Donovan said.
