A 23-year-old man is facing attempted murder charges after attacking an on-duty Chicago police detective in February in South Shore.

Kenyon Washington was arrested Friday after he was identified as one of the people who attacked and robbed a detective Feb. 8 in the 7700 block of South Yates Boulevard, Chicago police said.

That day, the detective was canvassing the scene of a murder when two male suspects attacked him, police said.

One of the suspects was armed with a handgun and the other with a knife, according to police.

Washington and the other male allegedly pushed the detective from behind and physically assaulted him while rummaging through his pockets, police said.

The pair fled the scene on foot after the detective’s partner came to his aid, according to police.

Minutes later, responding officers arrested one suspect in the 2300 block of East 75th Street, but he was only slapped with drug charges unrelated to the robbery, police said.

Washington is facing one felony count each of attempted fist-degree murder and armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, police said.

He was expected back in court Sunday.
