After some of the most frenzied “Saturday Night Live” buildup in years, Elon Musk opened his hosting gig with a few jokes, no incendiary remarks and no apologies.
The outspoken and uberwealthy SpaceX and Tesla CEO was a controversial choice to front the show, and a few social media remarks by cast members were interpreted as signals of protest.
“Look, I know I sometimes say or post strange things, but that’s just how my brain works,” Musk said in his monologue. “To anyone I’ve offended, I just want to say: I reinvented electric cars and I’m sending people to Mars in a rocket ship. Did you also think I was gonna be a chill, normal dude?”
He cited one example of his bizarre past — when he smoked weed on Joe Rogan’s podcast — and griped that people now think he does that all the time. “It’s like reducing O.J. Simpson to ‘murderer,’ ” he said. “It was one time!”
In keeping with the night’s Mother’s Day theme, he brought out his own mom to reminisce about when he designed and sold a video game as a boy.
“I’m excited for my Mother’s Day gift,” Maye Musk said, then dropped a reference to the cryptocurrency her son has been hyping: “I just hope it’s not Dogecoin.”
Replied the host, “It is.”
