Illinois Republicans Adam Kinzinger, Rodney Davis join Democrats to create Jan. 6 commission probing Capitol attack

While Trump and House GOP leaders were against the commission, it still gained 35 Republican votes.

WASHINGTON — The House passed a measure Wednesday to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol with the support of 35 Republicans, including Adam Kinzinger and Rodney Davis of Illinois.

While the measure to create a 10-member bipartisan commission passed because of the Democratic votes, it does show some movement among Republicans.

Only 10 Republicans, including Kinzinger, voted to impeach former President Donald Trump for his role in instigating the resurrection. While Trump and House GOP leaders were against the commission, it still gained 35 Republican votes.

Davis was not one of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump. He has been supporting an inquiry on the attack and in January introduced his own bill to create a 10-member commission to investigate the facts surrounding the attack.

The “National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act” was approved on a 252 to 175 roll call.

All 217 Democrats voted yes on the resolution. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill., was listed as not voting. Her spokesman said, “Kelly was present on the floor during the vote and believed her vote had been recorded. She fully supports the commission to investigate the events of January 6th.”

Senate passage is uncertain, since Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell does not support it.
