The Bears placed the running back on the physically unable to perform list Sunday, almost exactly 10 months after Cohen tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. With seven weeks until the opener, the Bears never figured to rush Cohen.

The Bears also put rookie slot receiver Dazz Newsome on the PUP list. He had surgery to fix a broken left collarbone in early June and is expected to be ready to return soon. He’ll have an opportunity — he figures to compete with former Patriots receiver Damiere Byrd for the playing time originally carved out for Anthony Miller. The Bears agreed to trade him Saturday night.

Bears veterans will report to training camp Tuesday at Halas Hall, while rookies and quarterbacks practiced Sunday.

Players on the PUP list can attend meetings but can’t practice until they are medically cleared by the team.

Cohen had surgery in October and was present at Bears’ mandatory minicamp as an observer in June. He’d never never missed a game as a pro until he was injured against the Falcons in Week 3. Cohen had 14 carries for 74 yards and caught six passes for 41 yards in two-and-a-half games last year.

He had a tumultuous offseason. In May, his fraternal twin brother Tyrell died of electrocution while climbing a power substation in a Raleigh, N.C. On social media, Cohen wrote that “I lost my brother, my twin, myself.”
