White Sox outfielder Adam Engel lands on IL; team makes four other roster moves

White Sox also call up pitchers Ryan Burr, Mike Wright, demote Matt Foster, designate Zack Burdi for assignment

The White Sox made five roster moves Monday, placing outfielder Adam Engel on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation and optioning right-hander Matt Foster to Triple-A Charlotte while replacing them with two pitchers on the 26-man roster.

The team also designated right-hander Zack Burdi, a former first-round draft pick, for assignment.

Up from Charlotte are right-handers Ryan Burr and Mike Wright, a 31-year-old veteran who was 7-5 with a 3.40 ERA over 16 starts with Charlotte. Signed as a free agent last December, Wright has pitched to a 6.00 ERA in 110 major league games iwith the Orioles and Mariners, including 23 starts.

Engel, 30, is hitting .248/.339/.505 with seven home runs in 33 games. He was sidelined recently with groin soreness after missing most of the season with a hamstring tear suffered in spring training.

Burr, 27, has a 3.86 ERA in 12 relief appearances with Charlotte this season. In 19 appearances with the Sox, he owns 2.95 ERA.

Burdi, 26, was DFA’d to make room for Wright on the 40-man roster. Burdi is 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA and 35 strikeouts over 24 23 innings covering 23 relief appearances with Charlotte. In six games with the Sox in 2021, he allowed six earned runs in nine innings.

Burdi was drafted in 2016.
