Donating to Texas flood victims? Here's how to vet fundraisers

If you’ve ever wanted to own your own private island, but not leave Illinois to do it, it appears you now can.

An island on the Chain O’ Lakes in northern Illinois is now on the market for $200,000.

“Here’s your once-in-a-lifetime chance to claim a rare gem on the legendary Chain O’ Lakes,” the listing reads.

The 1-acre property sits in the middle of Grass Lake, “just a stone’s throw from the iconic [Blarney] Island – a local hotspot known for its vibrant bar, live entertainment, boat races and more,” according to the listing from agent Brett Larson.

But this island listing might be different from others, Larson notes.

“Unlike most Chain O’ Lakes islands, which are often subdivided into small parcels, this is a true full-island ownership opportunity,” the listing reads.

The island has been on and off the market in recent years, first listing in January 2023 before being removed in January 2024 and re-listed in June 2025.

On June 26, the price of the island dropped from $250,000 to $200,000.

“The potential here is as vast as the surrounding waters – whether you’re looking to create a secluded retreat, a one-of-a-kind vacation rental, or an unforgettable family getaway,” the listing states.

Larson notes the property does have established electricity, though the condition of that electricity remains unknown, and there is a possibility for grants to help rehabilitate the island, though he encourages prospective buyers to do their “due diligence” as such a feat comes with its own challenges.

“Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of lakefront legend,” the listing states.
