4 people killed, including young child, in western Kankakee County head-on crash

Officials say four people, including a 5-year-old child, were killed in a violent head-on crash in western Kankakee County on Thursday night.

According to the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called to the scene of the crash near the community of Reddick at approximately 10:20 p.m. Thursday.

When those deputies arrived on the scene, they found two heavily damaged vehicles, one of which was completely engulfed in flames, according to officials.

There were two individuals in each of the vehicles, and all four of the individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Eyewitnesses told deputies that a Honda Accord was driving recklessly prior to the crash, crossing the center line repeatedly and passing other vehicles before slamming head-on into a Chevy Equinox SUV.

“The loss of life in this tragic crash — particularly the death of a young child — is absolutely heartbreaking,” Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating incident. We remind all motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and drive responsibly to help prevent tragedies like this from occurring.”

Illinois State Police are assisting with the investigation.
