Charges filed after Addison standoff led to shelter-in-place order Thursday

An Addison man is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly fired shots at police and sprayed officers with pepper spray Thursday.

One officer was struck in his Kevlar vest by gunfire during the incident Thursday, which prompted a shelter-in-place order and resulted in an hours-long standoff that was handled by area SWAT teams.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Salvador Lozano was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery to a police officer in connection with the case, which unfolded at a residence in the 200 block of East LaPorte Drive.

Officers were called to the scene just before noon, with a 911 caller asking for help in finding his dogs. An officer went to the scene and spoke to Lozano, but later left.

A short time later, a neighbor reported Lozano was behaving erratically, and he allegedly told officers he would “reign down fire at 12 o’clock” if his dogs weren’t found.

It is alleged Lozano then sprayed pepper spray at officers and threw the can at them. He then ran into the home. A short time later, he was accused of firing multiple gunshots at police, striking an officer who was wearing a Kevlar vest.

The officer was hospitalized and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Officers returned fire, but did not strike Lozano.

It is alleged Lozano fired shots at least 12 times in the coming hours. Finally, after a four-hour standoff, a SWAT team took him into custody, finding dozens of rounds and multiple weapons inside the home.

“This was an intense, extremely dangerous situation where an individual allegedly tried to take the lives of our police officers,” Addison Police chief Roy Selvik said. “Their swift actions, decisiveness and protection over nearby residents prevented anyone from being seriously hurt and brought the incident to a peaceful resolution.
