Anderson is day to day after feeling tightness in hamstring while running out ground ball in first inning

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shortstop Tim Anderson left the White Sox’ game against the Angels Sunday night with left hamstring tightness after running out a ground ball to open the game.

Anderson, the AL batting champion in 2019, hit a bouncer to second baseman David Fletcher and was out on a fairly close play. He is day to day, the Sox said.

Leury Garcia replaced Anderson at shortstop.

The Sox opened the season without outfielders Eloy Jimenez (torn pectoral muscle) and Adam Engel (hamstring) and lost right-hander Jimmy Cordero to Tommy John surgery.

Anderson, who hit his first home run Friday in the Sox’ 12-8 win over the Angels, finished second in the AL with a .322 average in 2020 and won his first Silver Slugger Award.

Anderson’s .329 average since 2019 is second-best in the major leagues behind the Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu (.335).

Anderson was on the injured list from Aug. 1-10 last season with a right groin strain. He was on the injured list from June 26 through July 31 in 2019 after suffering a sprained ankle against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
