Trump dumps his blog. Failure! Facebook dumps him for another two years. More failure!

Since losing the election, he has been languishing at Mar-a-Lago, searching for a way back. All he’s got left is email to deliver his juvenile insults.

The blog flopped.

Less than a month after it was launched on May 4, the former president’s new blog, “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump,” was history.

It was shut down last week with little fanfare. The site “cost a few thousand dollars to make” and had a simple, Trumpian mission, the New York Times reported. It would be “an online hub for supporters to see statements issued by the former president and communicate with him.”

A source, told the newspaper that “Mr. Trump had become frustrated after hearing from friends that the site was getting little traffic and making him look small and irrelevant.”

Oh, dear.

Trump’s advisors have been slipping and sliding to explain why the blog failed. “It was just auxiliary to the broader efforts we have and are working on,” Jason Miller, a top Trump aide, said via email to CNBC. And on Twitter, Miller suggested the Trump team was preparing something bigger and better to come. “Stay tuned!” he wrote.

In other words, it will be YUGE.

Or not. The defunct failed blog was just the latest episode in Trump’s long saga of failure. A few days later, on Friday afternoon, Facebook announced that Trump would be banned for at least two more years.

Since Trump lost — yes, lost — the November election, he has been languishing at his Mar-a-Lago Club, searching for a way back. Following his incitement of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, he was banned from both Twitter and Facebook, effectively shut off from his tens of millions of social media followers, fans who hung on every syllable of his early morning diatribes.

Trump has made a lot of claims. As he left the White House, he said he was going to build his own television network. He bragged that he would host a TV show.

Instead, the Master of Marketing has been sitting for lackluster interviews with the slobbering Trump sycophants who populate conservative media. And he has been clogging my email in-box with tiresome pronouncements about rigged elections and juvenile insults.

And, yes, he started that blog. Trump’s braintrust should have known better. A blog is oh so 2000. Communicating via self-made web sites, without distribution, is a non-starter.

Social media, powered by the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Tic Toc and Instagram, are the indispensable, cutting-edge communication strategies of 2021. Every serious politician and elected official deploys social media for messaging, fundraising, and campaigning.

Except for Donald J. Trump.

To penetrate the social media landscape, he needs access to those privately held platforms. But those monstrous communication engines were built over many years, some at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars, and now he would have to build his own.

For now, Trump is stuck with emailing out gems such as this one, dispatched on Friday afternoon:

“Next time I’m in the White House there will be no more dinners, at his request, with Mark Zuckerberg and his wife. It will be all business!”

What “Next time”?
