Federal grand jury accuses former CPS principal of fraudulent overtime scheme

Sarah Jackson Abedelal allegedly said the money was going to legitimate school expenses, but the feds say she used it to pay her own bills, including her mortgage.

A federal grand jury has accused a former Chicago Public Schools principal of scheming to collect overtime pay from school employees that she said would be used to pay school expenses — but allegedly went to her mortgage.

Sarah Jackson Abedelal, the former principal of Brennemann Elementary School on the North Side, faces 10 counts of wire fraud and is due in court Wednesday following her arrest.

The feds say Abedelal told school employees she would authorize overtime pay for hours the employees were not required to work. She then allegedly told them to withdraw the cash after paychecks were deposited, and then she allegedly collected the money from them.

Though she allegedly told the employees the money would be used to pay legitimate school expenses, the feds say she used the money to pay her own bills, including her mortgage.

This is a developing story.
