Rep. Marie Newman said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is ‘deeply broken. I hope she gets help’

WASHINGTON — Rep. Marie Newman, D-Ill. — a target of the incendiary Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., — who has been attacking her because of her transgender child, told the Chicago Sun-Times that Greene is “deeply broken. I hope she gets help.”

Rep. Marie Newman, D-Ill., said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., is “deeply broken,” on the July “At the Virtual Table” show

Newman made the comment Thursday on the July “At the Virtual Table,” the Chicago Sun-Times political show hosted by Laura Washington and Lynn Sweet.

Newman and Greene, both freshmen, have offices across the hall from each other in the Longworth House Office Building. Evie, Newman’s daughter, a DePaul University student, transitioned about five years ago.

In February, the House debated the LGBTQ anti-discrimination Equality Act.

Greene tried unsuccessfully to block a vote on the measure. Newman planted the trans flag outside her office — where Greene would almost certainly see it.

A few hours later, Greene put up a sign outside her door — where Newman couldn’t miss it — that said, “There are two genders. Male & Female. ‘Trust The Science.”’

While Newman got the ball rolling with the flag, Greene’s sign in reply was unduly nasty, given that the issue is deeply personal for Newman. Newman shared her story about Evie’s transition in a speech on the House floor, so that she had a trans child was widely known.

I asked Newman on the show if she had any update on Greene, to see if by chance, in the passing months, the women have talked.

“That sign is still there, “ Newman said. “It’s still hateful and all of her behavior, her hate, and her spewing is indicative of who she is. And so it says nothing about the issue or the topic, which is just equality.

“Which is, you know the LGBTQ+ community is not asking for more or less, they’re just asking for equality, and that’s very reasonable.

“So, what I will say about Representative Taylor Greene, is, that she’s deeply broken, and I hope she gets help.”

As the months passed, Greene has escalated her taunts and attacks on Newman. In July, Greene started mocking Newman by calling her “Newperson.”

Earlier this year, Democrats, who control the House, stripped Greene of committee assignments. That move came after Greene, a 9-11 denier and QAnon conspiracy booster, threatened to execute Democrats, spread anti-Semitic tropes and pushed baseless claims about staged school shootings.

Greene has found an ally in freshman Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., who represents a far southern Illinois, deeply Republican district. The two have become friends, so much so that Greene headlined a fundraiser for Miller in downstate Effingham earlier this month.

Since then, Greene has also become an election denier who is sympathetic to the mob who invaded the Capitol on Jan. 6. Miller’s husband, state Rep. Chris Miller, R-Oakland, was at the Capitol in Jan. 6. The Sun-Times earlier reported that in a Facebook live broadcast outside the Capitol that day, Chris Miller told rally-goers that supporters of then-President Donald Trump were “engaged in a great cultural war to see which worldview will survive. Whether we will remain a free people under free market capitalism or whether they will put us under the tyranny of socialism and communism and dangerous Democrat terrorists.”

WBEZ’s Dan Mihalopoulos covered the fundraiser and reported, “Greene sought to rekindle her now-infamous feud with Democratic Congresswoman Marie Newman of Illinois, again attacking Newman’s transgender daughter in her remarks in Effingham.

“Her so-called daughter is a trans, biological adult son, approximately close to the same age as my two, very much biological real girls – daughters,” Greene said of Newman, drawing laughter from many in the crowd. “I call her Marie Newperson. ‘Cause she doesn’t believe in gender! I don’t want to offend her, so I changed her name from Newman to Newperson…She is very confused. As a matter of fact, so is her son.”

Said Newman on our show, “Honestly, I just ignore her and block her out. She’s not a serious member of Congress, and I’m there to do very serious business.”

KINZINGER, WIFE EXPECTING FIRST CHILD

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., announced via Instagram on Saturday that he and wife, Sofia, are expecting “Baby Kinzinger,” who will be “landing” in January. The couple are in front of a small plane in the picture, with Kinzinger, a military pilot, kissing his wife.

Wrote Kinzinger, “New copilot, reporting for training soon!”
