April Ross and Alix Klineman begin women’s beach volleyball Round of 16 play on Sunday night against Cuba’s Leila Consuelo Martinez Ortega and Lidianny Echevarria Benitez.

Klineman and Ross finished the preliminary round atop Pool B at 3-0. They dropped just one set across three matches, with a total of 140 points for and 109 against.
Klineman is in search of her first Olympic medal, while Ross is gunning for her first gold after winning bronze at the 2016 Rio Games and silver at the 2012 London Games.
They are the only American pair left in the tournament after Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil lost their Round of 16 matchup on Saturday to Canada’s Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson.
Martinez and Echevarria qualified for the knockout round via the lucky loser playoffs, where they beat the Netherlands’ Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon in straight sets, 21-17, 21-17.
The Cuban duo went 1-2 in Pool E in the preliminary round, being outscored 116-98. They were defeated in straight sets in each of their losses, with their lone win coming against Italy’s Viktoria Orsi Toth and Marta Menegatti, who went 0-3.
