With the principals of a completely overhauled team in place, the Chicago Bulls‘ work to fill out the back-end of the roster continued on Day 5 of free agency.

Friday morning, the team agreed to re-sign sparkplug guard Javonte Green on a two-year contract, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.

Green, 28, was acquired from the Celtics as part of the three-team deal that netted Daniel Theis and Troy Brown Jr. at the 2021 trade deadline. While his Bulls stats — 2.6 points and 1.2 rebounds per game across 16 appearances — don’t jump off the screen, his energy and athleticism popped in limited opportunities down the stretch of the 2020-21 season, particularly on the defensive end.

“He’s obviously a long, quick athlete, and he’s also bright, too. He’s a smart player,” Billy Donovan said of Green after he notched 7 points, 3 rebounds and a steal in a near-comeback against the 76ers on May 3. “I think he knows who he is as a player and I think he tries to play within the framework of who he is.”

That night, Donovan also praised Green’s disruptiveness on the defensive end and penchant for momentum-shifting hustle plays.

Green’s NBA journey began on a two-year contract with Boston in the summer of 2019 after going undrafted out of Radford (where, standing 6-foot-4, he played some power forward) in 2015, then playing multiple seasons in Europe.

“Just job after job,” Green said in May when asked about his impending free agency. “Whatever happens, I just got to stick with it. I know exactly what I have to do to get on the basketball court and get on the basketball team. My journey was tough, but I’m here. So I’m just blessed to be here. Whatever happens happens.”

Back with the Bulls, he’ll look to continue doing what he does best, even if his role projects to be of the end-of-bench variety.

“I just bring energy that the team needs,” Green said in May when asked to scout himself. “I just know that’s what got me here, just playing hard. Everything else going to follow suit — athleticism and also my talent. I work hard to be here. I just know what I have to do to be on the basketball court.”
