Tokyo Updates: Ross, Klineman in Round of 16; US Track Athletes Go for Gold

On Day 10 of the Tokyo Olympics, April Ross and Alix Klineman look for a win after two other U.S. beach volleyball teams lost in the Round of 16, while Juvaughn Harrison in long jump and Keni Harrison and Gabriele Cunningham in 100m hurdles look to medal. Here’s all the latest news from Tokyo:

Ross and Klineman look to advance in beach volleyball

April Ross and Alix Klineman take on a Cuban pair, Lidianny Echevarria Benitez and Leila Consuelo Martinez Ortega, in the Round of 16 at 8 p.m. ET. Stream live here.

The U.S. has picked up at least one beach volleyball medal at every Olympics since the sport’s debut at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Jake Gibb and Tri Bourne go for a spot in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday. Two more U.S. teams – Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena; Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil – were eliminated in their Round of 16 matches.

Men’s long jump, women’s 100m hurdles headline track and field

Juvaughn Harrison is part of the 12-man field in long jump at 9:20 p.m. ET (stream). He jumped 8.13m in the preliminary round, good enough for fifth place. Leader Juan Miguel Echevarria of Cuba went 8.5m.

Harrison will also contest the triple jump beginning on Monday at 8 p.m. ET, becoming the first American man to compete in both long jump and triple jump since Jim Thorpe in 1912.

Two American women are in the 100m hurdles final at 10:50 p.m. ET. Keni Harrison had the third-best time in the semifinals; Gabriele Cunningham came in eighth. Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico led the pack at 12.26 seconds.

U.S. women’s indoor volleyball aims to bounce back

The U.S. women’s volleyball plays Italy in its final match of pool play at 10:05 p.m. ET. Stream live here.

The Americans lost their last match to the Russian Olympic Committee in straight sets after leading scorer Jordan Thompson exited with a sprained ankle. Her status for tonight is unknown, though coach Karch Kiraly said after the loss that she was “unlikely” to play in the game against Italy and the team was “somewhat hopeful” she could return for the knockout stages.
