Team USA beach volleyball’s April Ross and Alix Klineman will compete for a gold medal and a shot at history against Australia on Thursday night.
The Ross-Klineman pair is looking to become the second duo in American women’s beach volleyball history to go undefeated in a single Olympics. Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings accomplished the feat three times (2004, 2008, 2016).
Ross-Klineman has been dominant in Tokyo, sweeping five of its first six matchups. The only set the U.S. team lost was in pool play against the Netherlands. Team USA’s semifinal matchup against Switzerland was a routine sweep, winning the two sets 21-12 and 21-11.
Australia has played its best volleyball over the past three games as they enter the gold medal match. The duo of Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy is 5-1 at the Olympics, with its only loss coming to the Russian Olympic Committee in pool play. In the semifinal, Australia swept Latvia 2-0 (23-21, 21-13).
USA-Australia will begin at 10:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
