White Sox Tee Off on Cubs, Smack Three First-Inning Homers

Sox smack three first-inning homers off Cubs originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Going for a sweep of their Crosstown rivals and playing on national TV, the Chicago White Sox had an opportunity to make a big statement.

Instead, they made three of them in the first inning.

The White Sox teed off on the Chicago Cubs early and often Sunday night, smacking a trio of first-inning home runs to build a big, loud lead at Wrigley Field.

Tim Anderson wasn’t originally a part of Tony La Russa’s lineup for Sunday’s game, due for some rest during the current road trip. But a pregame switch got him back to his typical leadoff spot, and he didn’t waste any time showing how good a call that late change was, blasting the first pitch of the game out for a homer.

Three batters later, it was Eloy Jiménez, already with a homer to his name since returning from a months-long injury layoff. He appeared in all three games of this series in left field, of note following a bout of groin tightness, but seeing him send one out against his former organization was less surprising, as he’s building quite the resume against the team that traded him across town four years ago.

That was a big enough statement, but Andrew Vaughn made it even louder, hitting his own two-run shot just two batters after Jiménez, making it a three-homer first for the White Sox for the first time in almost a decade.

Not a bad way to get things going on the North Side.

While the Cubs are a fourth-place team that went through a franchise-altering selloff at the trade deadline a week ago, the White Sox have been able to shake some of their recent offensive woes this weekend. They scored eight runs in the first game of the series Friday before blanking the Cubs by a 4-0 score Saturday. They belted four combined homers in those two games before adding another three in the first inning Sunday.

Getting Luis Robert back Monday, things could about to get very, very scary for opposing pitchers.
