Cubs' David Ross Expected to Rejoin Team Sunday Vs. Giants

Manager David Ross is set to rejoin the Cubs from his COVID-19 isolation for Sunday’s series finale against the Giants, bench coach and acting manager Andy Green said Saturday.

Ross and team president Jed Hoyer tested positive for COVID-19 Sept. 3 and have spent the last week isolating. Both have been symptomatic, and the Cubs have not reported any further positive tests.

“You’re thankful it didn’t [spread],” Green said, “but you’re also cognizant of how quickly it can still show up in any clubhouse or any work culture.

“We’ll continue our vigilance, but you’re not free of this just because you dodged one bullet.”

Green’s stint as the acting manager got off to a memorable start — he was ejected Sept. 3 against Pittsburgh and the rest of the Cubs coaching staff collaborated to handle managerial duties.

The Cubs won that game and have gone 5-2 with Green leading the club, entering Saturday.

“The guys have played well over, not just the last seven or eight days, but over the last month,” Green said. “The guys have kind of found their stride and played good baseball. It’s been fun to watch.”

Green’s overall record in four seasons managing is 274-366 (2016-19 with the Padres).

“My record needs a lot of help,” Green joked. “There’s no doubt about that. I don’t know if I can petition MLB to have these wins transferred over to my resume.”

Ross has remained involved in the Cubs’ day-to-day operations during his absence, from roster moves to making the lineup. He even texted Green around midnight last weekend a highlight from a Dodgers-Giants game to show the team.

“He’s on do not disturb now,” Green joked. “I only have about 24 hours left to be in charge. Then I got to start answering his calls.”

Green joked it’s been quieter without Ross the last week but that the Cubs have missed his presence.

“Everybody enjoys being around him every single day,” Green said. “There’s a sharp edge that’s good for a culture and good for a clubhouse.

“He expects to win no matter what roster we have or don’t have, and he creates a nice culture that way. We’re pushing towards that every single day.”
