A Star Wars fan has forked over millions to control the power of the Force.
Darth Vader’s iconic lightsaber fetched $3,654,000 on Thursday, according to auction site Propstore, making it the most expensive piece of “Star Wars” memorabilia ever bought at auction.
The “original screen-matched, hero dueling lightsaber prop” was used on-screen in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” The lightsaber, known for its ominous red glow, appeared in some of the saga’s most famous scenes, including Vader’s “I am your father” reveal to Luke Skywalker.
The lightsaber was used by both Darth Vader actor David Prowse and stunt actor Bob Anderson during the shooting of the second and third “Star Wars” movies.
“This is the primary dueling prop created for Vader’s character in both Empire and Jedi,” Propstore wrote in the item’s listing. “It saw extensive use during the filming of both movies and is one of the most memorable film props from the original trilogy.”
That “extensive use” led to some eventual wear on the prop. Propstore said the back of the shroud has a crack and one of the grips is broken, but that “these marks serve as compelling evidence of the lightsaber’s direct involvement in the action.”
Darth Vader’s lightsaber was one of many movie props up for bid at the Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction: Los Angeles Summer 2025 event, which coincides with the 45th anniversary of the release of “The Empire Strikes Back.” Bidding began Thursday at 10 a.m. PT and was expected to sell for $1-3 million.
Other items sold at the auction include an Anakin Skywalker lightsaber from the “Star Wars” prequels (126,000), a bullwhip and belt used by Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” ($475,650), Jean-Luc Picard’s Ressikan flute from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” ($403,200) and Rick Dalton’s flamethrower from “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” ($346,500).
