Detroit Lions use incredible ‘stumble bum' celebration vs. Bears

The Chicago Bears had a bit of déjà vu during their game against the Detroit Lions thanks to a celebration that called back to an iconic play from last season.

On a second and long play during the game, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams rolled out of the pocket to the right, and instead of throwing the ball out of bounds he ended up throwing it near Lions safety Kerby Joseph, who made a diving interception on the play.

Joseph and his teammates ran down the field to celebrate, and they ran a mock “play” with Joseph throwing the ball to a teammate for a touchdown.

If the celebration looked somewhat familiar to Bears fans, there was a good reason.

The celebration was a call back to a play from last season that the Lions ran against the Bears that former Lions offensive coordinator (and now Bears head coach) Ben Johnson called the “stumble bum,” where quarterback Jared Goff pretended to fall down before uncorking a perfect throw to Sam LaPorta for a touchdown.

Here’s how Goff described the evolution of the play:

Needless to say, Johnson was less of a fan of the celebration than he was of the original play, as the turnover helped fuel a strong start to the game for the Lions in a battle of 0-1 teams.
