Office Depot employee fired for refusing to print Charlie Kirk vigil poster

TODAY’s Craig Melvin stepped in to help the Harlem Globetrotters break a Guinness World Record live on air!

Craig joined the legendary basketball team as they attempted to break the record for longest relay passing a spinning basketball with one continuous spin on the TODAY Plaza on Sept. 12.

To break the record, the Globetrotters needed to pass a spinning basketball on their finger from one player to another, with a minimum of six people.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric joined the team on the plaza and went over the rules for the attempt.

“So the Globetrotters are attempting to break the Guinness World Records title for longest relay passing a spinning basketball,” Empric said. “The mark to beat is six. I need one single spin, clean transfers from person to person, and if the ball falls off, the attempt ends.”

The seven Globetrotters grabbed their ball celebrating 100 years of the team, and got spinning.

“I’m gonna try to get you guys a good spin first,” Globetrotter Thunder Law said. “Let’s do it!”

The Globetrotters hit six on their first attempt, before the ball spun off of a player’s finger.

“We got the record now, y’all saw it, but we want to do it with swag,” Law said as he regrouped the players. “Come on!”

Each of the seven players then spun the basketball on their finger, before passing it to Craig, which made the crowd on the plaza to burst into cheers.

“So the mark to beat was six,” Empric said. “The first attempt you hit six, the second attempt you hit eight! It’s a new Guinness World Record. Congratulations, Globetrotters, you are officially amazing.”

Empric added: “And Craig, congratulations!”

Craig ran over to the team to celebrate, including jumping up and down, screaming and joining a team high-five.

“100 years of excellence right there, baby,” Law said as his teammate held up their new world record plaque.

The Globetrotters, an exhibition basketball team, are gearing up to celebrate their centennial anniversary in 2026, and in honor, the team will be traveling to more than 300 cities across the world next year.

The team is kicking off their world tour on Dec. 14 in their hometown arena of Madison Square Garden, before heading to 200 cities in the U.S. and more than 100 more across the globe.

“One thing about the Globetrotters, we go all over the world every year,” Law said. “We’ve been doing it for 100 years now, which is crazy.”

“That’s the beautiful thing about the Globetrotters — if you can’t catch us here in New York, just check harlemglobetrotters.com and we will be somewhere near you,” he added.
