Trump to nationalize 300 Illinois National Guard members, Pritzker says

Federal officers shot an armed person who was among the drivers that rammed an agent’s vehicle on Saturday morning in Chicago, the Department of Homeland Security said.

The shooting was reported at around 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of South California Avenue and West 35th Street in the city’s Brighton Park neighborhood.

DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said agents were conducting routine patrols on Saturday morning when they were rammed by 10 cars and “boxed in.”

“Agents were unable to move their vehicle and exited the car,” she said in a statement, in part.

McLaughlin said one of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon, and law enforcement was “forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots.”

The woman, according to the DHS assistant secretary, drove herself to the hospital for treatment.

No law enforcement officers were injured, authorities said.

McLaughlin said the woman, who hasn’t been identified “was named in a CBP intelligence bulletin last week for doxing agents and posting online ‘Hey to all my gang lets fu** those mother ******* up, don’t let them take anyone.’”

In the hours following the shooting, both law enforcement activity and protests took place nearby, as shown on video. NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter captured video of law enforcement members, some of whom were carrying long guns, in the parking lot of an auto business near South Western Avenue and West 35th Street.

Footage posted on the Citizen app showed ICE agents positioned in a line behind crime scene tape as protesters delivered chants, including “Don’t take the bait” and “ICE, go home!”

Protests have occurred in recent days as part of an immigration enforcement effort called “Operation Midway Blitz,” which has seen more than 1,000 arrests since its inception on Sept. 8, according to DHS.

While demonstrations have taken place in Chicago, including in the downtown area, they have primarily been centered around an ICE processing center in west suburban Broadview. Five protesters were arrested on Friday following demonstrations on both sides of the processing center, including in a new designated protest area more than a block away from the building.

NBC Chicago reporters and photographers have witnessed tensions rise between agents and protesters.

Escalating clashes between demonstrators and armed personnel have occurred at the site, with video capturing federal agents deploying tear gas.

Protests continued outside the suburban facility on Saturday, and as of 10 a.m., no arrests had been made, authorities said.
