What brands to toss out amid expanding cinnamon recall over elevated lead levels

Sixteen brands of cinnamon have been recalled by the FDA after the products were found to possibly contain “unsafe” levels of led, including some distributed in Illinois and sold across the Midwest.

The recall was first issued by the FDA in January; however, the brands the recall applies to has expanded several times since, including numerous from Illinois.

At least two distributors in Illinois were on the list of recalled products: Raja Foods LLC
in Skokie and Asli Fine Foods in Woodbridge.

The recall also details that the recalled products were distributed at retailers in a number of Midwestern areas, including to grocery stores in Michigan, retailers in Minnesota and Ohio, A&Y Global Market in Columbia, Mo., and Save-A-Lot Food Stores in Missouri.

Consumers are advised by the FDA to throw away and not to buy the ground cinnamon products subject to the recall.

“This product has a long shelf life. Consumers should check their homes and discard this product,” the recall alert says.

The FDA says it will update the recall alert as necessary if additional products are found containing elevated levels of led and that exposure to the products may be unsafe.
