A Tennessee explosives manufacturing plant blew up Friday morning in a “very devastating blast” that’s left as many as “19 souls” missing, with officials saying some are dead.
Some of the missing are believed to be “deceased” but Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis declined to put an exact number on the fatalities.
“Yes, I can tell you right now that we’re looking for 19 individuals,” Davis told reporters Friday afternoon. “And a lot of times when I have this type of situation, I’ll refer to them more than just a person. They’re a soul to me. I can tell you that we’re missing 19 souls.”
Davis called the explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems near McEwen a “very devastating blast” that “encompassed one whole building.”
“We do have several people at this time that’s unaccounted for,” Sheriff Davis said earlier on Friday. “We are trying to be mindful of families and that situation. We do have some folks. We can confirm that we do have some that are deceased.”
The plant, where the 7:45 a.m. CDT explosion happened, sits on the line of Humphreys and Hickman Counties, about 60 miles southwest of Nashville.
“We can confirm there has been an explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems in the Bucksnort area,” the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
“Emergency services are currently on the scene working to address the situation. Important: Please avoid the area to allow emergency responders to do their work. If you are in the area, stay clear and follow the instructions from local authorities.”
Accurate Energetic Systems, founded in 1980, said its business in McEwen is “dedicated to the development, manufacture, handling, and storage of high-quality energetic products utilized in both defense and commercial markets.”
