A 72-year-old man fatally shot his 78-year-old sister and turned the gun on himself in a homicide-suicide in southwest suburban Oak Lawn, officials said Friday afternoon.
Autopsies Friday determined the woman died of a gunshot wound to her head in a homicide, while the man died by suicide, also of a gunshot wound to his head, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Officers responded to a home in the 10000 block of South Maple Avenue around noon Thursday after a health care worker was unable to contact the residents inside the home, Oak Lawn police said.
After entering the home, the officers discovered the unidentified 72-year-old man and 78-year-old woman with gunshot wounds, police and the medical examiner’s office said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
A gun was recovered, and the shooting was said to be isolated, according to officials.
The investigation is ongoing.
