Indiana vs. Illinois basketball: David Mirkovic, Illini cruise past Hoosiers

After suffering back-to-back losses against Michigan State and Wisconsin, Illinois’ defense had a strong Sunday in defeating the Indiana Hoosiers.

The Illini held Indiana to just 51 points on the afternoon, and buoyed by a big offensive day from David Mirkovic Illinois managed to right the ship before what will be a tough stretch of games in the days ahead.

Mirkovic led all scorers with 25 points on the afternoon, and freshman sensation Keaton Wagler scored 18 points as he played nearly the entire game. Tomislav Ivisic added 14 points in the winning effort.

Kylan Boswell, who had missed nearly a month of action, was a key contributor on both ends of the floor for Illinois in the game, as he notched nine points and seven rebounds on the afternoon in Champaign.

While Sunday’s win certainly feels good for Illinois, they’ll be in for a tough stretch of games to wrap up February. The Illini will head out to the west coast this week where they will take on USC on Wednesday, then UCLA on Saturday. The Bruins are 17-8 overall this season and 9-5 in the Big Ten, but they have a sparkling 14-1 record at Pauley Pavillion, making it one of the toughest road environments in college basketball.

As if that weren’t enough, Illinois will wrap up the month by returning to Champaign and facing Michigan, the No. 2 team in America that has lost just one game in Big Ten conference play this season.
