Popular suburban Chicago mall adds ‘preferred' paid parking spots

Can’t find parking at the mall? You now have the choice to pay for a “preferred” spot if you’re visiting one popular suburban shopping center.

Oakbrook Center Mall is now offering 108 paid, preferred parking spots, according spokesperson Lindsay Kahn. Overall, the mall has approximately 11,000 parking spots.

“99 percent of the parking remains free,” Kahn said.

The preferred parking costs $3 for the first hour, and $2 for each additional hour, up to $11 total. Ten percent of the proceeds of the program will go to The People’s Resource Center, which provides services for DuPage residents, Kahn added.

The paid spots are designed to add convenience for shoppers, or for those going into the mall for a dinner reservation, a fitness class, a health service or a quick trip, Kahn said.

“We know parking can be a bit of a pain point,” she added.

The paid spots are in two small, designated areas at the mall. One section is near the north entrance, near Crate and Barrel, Kahn said. The other is on the second level of the orange parking deck.

The preferred parking spots are marked by signs, Kahn said, and customers must scan QR codes to pay. There are no kiosks or meters.

The change went into effect at the beginning of February, Kahn said.
