Team USA curling squad nearly didn't make their gold medal match on time

The USA curling mixed-doubles team was very nearly late to their gold medal match against Sweden, and they had to resort to drastic measures to get there on time.

The team of Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropnik have been dazzling the world with their skills this week in Cortina, as the team will become the first American squad to win a medal in mixed doubles curling.

Unfortunately for the duo, they very nearly didn’t make it to the rink on time.

According to NBC Sports’ broadcast of the gold medal game with Sweden, the bus that Thiesse and Dropnik were riding on to get to the venue in Cortina ended up stuck in traffic because of an accident.

As a result, the team and their coaches had to walk to the venue, even having to walk into the spectators’ entrance in order to get into the arena on time Tuesday evening.

The setback didn’t seem to bother them however, as they came out of the gates with a point in the first end of the gold medal match.

Thiesse is the first U.S. woman to ever win a medal in curling during the Olympics, and the team is the first to ever reach the semifinals in the three editions of the Games that have featured mixed-doubles curling.

It was an eventful ride to get to the final, as Thiesse and Dropnik defeated the reigning gold medal winners in the semifinals, dispatching Italy from the tournament.

Thiesse will have another chance at Olympic glory later in these Games, as she’ll be part of the women’s curling squad that will hit the ice in coming days.
