When to watch Ilia Malinin skate in the Olympic team event Sunday

Streaming links below

Ilia Malinin dazzled the world when he landed a backflip during his short program skate, and he’ll be back in action as he tries to win the United States a gold medal Sunday.

Malinin and Team USA led in the figure skating team competition heading into the final day of the event on Sunday, with their pairs, women’s and men’s free skates looming before they could head to the top of the medal stand.

The U.S. led Japan by five points heading into the event as they try to secure back-to-back gold medals.

Their effort was buoyed Saturday by a second-place skate from 21-year-old phenom Malinin in the men’s short program.

Here’s how to watch and what to expect:

What time will the men’s free skate begin?

The men’s free skate rounds out the competition at approximately 2:55 p.m. CT.

How did Malinin and Team USA get here?

Malinin went from incredible highs during his men’s short program performance Saturday as he landed a backflip during the competition, to the lows of a shaky combination of jumps that dropped his score to 98.00 for the day.

Reigning Olympic silver medalist Yuma Kagiyama landed a pair of quads, one in combination with a triple toe loop, to score 108.67 points and to give Japan the win in the short program portion of the competition.

What can we expect Sunday?

Malinin did not do his historic quad axel in the routine, but he is expected to attempt it Sunday. The 4 1/2-revolution jump is one only he has ever landed in competition, and he’ll try to do so again early in his routine.

On the women’s side, Amber Glenn will take to the ice for the first time, following Alysa Liu’s stellar skate in the women’s short program.

Glenn has been nearly unbeatable the past two years and is the only American woman trying a triple axel at the Games, but it’s not clear if she will attempt that in the team event Sunday.
