Strong to severe storms loomed in the Friday night forecast for nearly the entire Chicago area, with a tornado watch in effect for multiple counties and a flood watch as heavy downpours could worsen already overflowing rivers.
According to the National Weather Service, the tornado watch, issued until 8 p.m., includes McHenry, LaSalle, DeKalb and Kenosha counties. Hail, heavy downpours, damaging winds and flash flooding were also possible with Friday night’s storms, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
As the storms approach, here’s what to expect and when.
Storm timeline
“Another night of stormy weather coming our way,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott said of the thunderstorms moving in.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, nearly the entire Chicago area is under an “enhanced” risk of severe weather Friday night, which ranks as level three of five.

According to Scott, “all weather hazards are on the table,” including damaging hail, wind, flash flooding and tornadoes.
The possibility of flooding comes as many parts of the Chicago area were already under a flood watch from recent rainfall. According to Scott, Friday’s storms could produce rainfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour.”
About 7 p.m. is when a line of storms will move in, Scott said, starting to the west. Showers and storms are expected to be over Chicago by about 9 p.m. or 10 p.m., then moving to the east into northwest Indiana.
Saturday morning, some showers could linger, Scott said, with clouds clearing into the afternoon.
Saturday will also be chillier, as a cold front moving in behind the storms will bring temperatures down from the 70s Friday into the 50s over the weekend.
Besides the colder weather, Scott said, the weekend looks to be mostly dry, though some areas of frost could form Sunday into Monday.
By Tuesday, temperatures will rise back up into the 70s, Scott said.
