Every baseball fan in attendance of a themed White Sox game against the Cincinnati Reds this summer at Rate Field will walk away with their very own “Pope hat.”
The “Pope hats” were first announced earlier this week as a limited-edition item only available to specialty theme night ticket purchasers for the game now dubbed “Pews at the Ballpark.”
Now, giveaway has expanded ballpark-wide “due to overwhelming fan demand,” the White Sox said on Friday.
Everyone in attendance of the White Sox game against the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 11 will receive one of the hats. Specialty theme night ticketholders will also receive an additional themed item at the game, the team said.
“The fans have spoken, and unlike some of our more limited quantity promotions, the White Sox Pope Hat is one we believe all fans should have the opportunity to take home,” said Brooks Boyer, White Sox chief revenue and marketing officer. “We viewed the promotion as a creative way to celebrate one of the franchise’s most popular fans, and by the overwhelming response we received, White Sox fans certainly agreed.”
The “Pews at the Ballpark” game is the latest of several pope-themed events by the Sox, who announced their 2026 schedule with a “Conclave” theme in honor of Pope Leo XVI, the first American-born pope and a confirmed fan of the team.
Pope Leo XIV also delivered a special message to Chicago, during a special celebration at Rate Field last year.
