A Kentucky sheriff’s deputy who was critically injured in a shooting earlier this week previously served with the Chicago Police Department.
Deputy Rick Coyle, a current member of the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office, was an officer and member of the SWAT team during his tenure in Chicago, a former deputy chief confirmed.
Coyle was shot on Thursday evening while serving emergency guardianship paperwork at a residence in the town of Sturgis, according to the Kentucky State Police. Sturgis is approximately 45 miles southwest of Evansville, Indiana. According to authorities, gunfire was exchanged during the shooting, and the 60-year-old suspect was fatally wounded.
Coyle was struck by gunfire from the suspect and airlifted to an Evansville hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison, writing in a Facebook post, said the two have been friends for more than 30 years.
“We have been close since our freshman year at Brother Rice High School in Chicago,” Morrison said, in part. “Rick is a good man, a dedicated law enforcement officer, and someone who has always put others before himself…”
Brother Rice High School, on Facebook, said it’s “praying for one of our own.”
“We ask our entire BRotherhood to lift up Rick, his wife Jamie, his family, and his fellow deputies in prayer,” the post read, in part.
