Metra UP-N trains halted after crash with flatbed carrying milling equipment

Metra trains on the Union Pacific North line were halted Thursday afternoon after a train struck a flatbed trailer carrying a cold milling machine.

Around 2:46 p.m., UP-N train #337, scheduled to arrive at Kenosha at 3:45 p.m., was stopped after striking the flatbed truck near the Wilmette station., Metra said.

All trains in the area were stopped after the crash until further notice, Metra said.

“The duration of this delay is unknown but may be extensive,” Metra said on its website. “Metra will provide updates as information becomes available.”

Aerial video from NBC showed the aftermath of the crash, with emergency responders and investigators working around the train.

Photos and videos from the crash site showed a large cold milling machine that had been badly damaged by the collision lying on its side.

Metra’s website showed at least two UP-N trains scheduled to depart after 3 p.m. were canceled due to the crash.

UP-N #396, scheduled to depart Ogilvie Transportation Center at 3:02 p.m., and #396, scheduled to depart Winnetka at 4:15 p.m., were both canceled, according to Metra’s website.
