Another Mariano's grocery store in the Chicago suburbs to shutter

Another large suburban Mariano’s grocery store is set to close.

According to a Mariano’s spokesperson, the Gurnee Mariano’s location, at 6655 Grand Ave., will close for good next month.

“Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to close our Gurnee store on July 17th,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “While we are leaving this location, we will offer each impacted associate the opportunity to transfer to a new location.”

This closure is part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business.”

The statement went on to say that the closure was part of a “larger, company-wide decision to run more efficiently” and “ensure the long-term” of the grocer.

It was not immediately clear if another grocery store was planned for the location, and the village of Gurnee did not provided a statement.

The Gurnee Mariano’s location opened in 2014 in the former Dominick’s spot, a report from the Daily Herald said. The closure follows multiple other suburban Mariano’s locations that have closed in the last year, including Buffalo Grove, Bloomingdale, Glenview and Northfield.

The stores have been part of a larger closure plan Mariano’s parent company Kroger announced in 2025. In an earnings call last June, Kroger, which also owns King Soopers, QFC, Fred Meyer and Harris Teeter, said the store closures were necessary because of “$100 million impairment charge.”

“As a result of these store closures, Kroger expects a modest financial benefit,” Kroger said in a release at the time. The release went on to say the grocery giant is “is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience.”

In Kroger’s 2026 first quarter earnings report, Chairman Ron Sargent said the company has “delivered substantial cost savings across the organization through operational efficiencies and modernizing how we work.”

Sargent went on to say the company made “difficult but necessary” decisions to close underperforming stores and “reduce corporate head count to create a more agile and focused organization.”

According to Sargent, Kroger plans to increase new store openings by 30 percent in 2026, with plans to expand into new regions including Jacksonville and Kansas City.

Mariano’s currently has 39 grocery stores across the city and suburbs, including locations in Vernon Hills, Arlington Heights, Orland Park, Western Springs, Bannockburn, Park Ridge, Skokie, Naperville and Shorewood.
