Thousands of runners will take over streets in the city’s Garfield Park, Humboldt Park and Douglass Park neighborhoods for the popular half marathon this weekend.

Street closures began Wednesday and are set to ramp up ahead of the big race, but there will also be a number of “wellness-based events” in the lead-up to the race that could mean additional closures.

Three “wellness-based events” will also take place Saturday in the Garfield Park park neighborhood.

The events start at 8 a.m. and continue through 11 a.m., featuring a community shakeout run led by Peace Runners 773, youth races and a family friendly wellness walk.

Security

Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications said it will monitor the event and Chicago Police will enforce restrictions along the race route.

“OEMC will issue any alerts and notifications needed to keep residents and attendees up to date on weather conditions and emergencies. Sign up for NotifyChicago alerts at NotifyChicago.org. OEMC also issues TEXT alerts for lakefront notices, issues affecting businesses or COVID-19 updates,” the agency said.

They also encouraged attendees and participants to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity.

Parking

Parking will be limited near the start and finish lines in Garfield Park, but a free shuttle service and parking will be available at the Halsted/Taylor Parking Structure (760 W. Taylor Street and 763 W. Polk Street), located on the University of Illinois Chicago campus.

The shuttle will run every 20 minutes starting at 4 a.m. and continuing through 12:30 p.m.

The first shuttle is anticipated to leave the UIC parking lot around 4:30 a.m., and the final shuttle will leave Garfield Park at 12:30 p.m., organizers said.

Shuttles will drop off and pick up participants near Garfield Park at Central Park Avenue and Monroe Street.
