Trump Tower in Chicago could soon be located on ‘Barack Hussein Obama Way'

A proposal to honorarily rename the street in Chicago where Trump Tower is located to “Barack Hussein Obama Way” was introduced at city council this week.

The proposal was introduced by 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly on Wednesday, the eve of the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in the city’s Jackson Park neighborhood — an event President Trump was not invited to.

If approved, the ordinance would honorarily rename the east side of North Wabash Avenue between East Kinzie Street and East Wacker Drive to “Barack Hussein Obama Way.”

Plus, an honorary street sign marking the designation would also be put up right outside Trump Tower, located at 401 N. Wabash Ave., and on the Wabash Avenue Bridge, according to the proposed ordinance.

A petition calling for Wabash Avenue be renamed to honor former President Barack Obama that was created in early May now has nearly 30,000 signatures.

“We propose a tribute to a figure who stands for hope and change, Barack Hussein Obama. By renaming Wabash Ave in Chicago to Barack Hussein Obama Ave, we would honor him at the time of his presidential center’s opening. This move resonates with hope and progress, uniting us in the pursuit of a brighter tomorrow,” the petition’s description says.

Reilly’s proposal is slightly different than what was asked for in the petition as it stops short of officially renaming the street.

The proposed ordinance will now go to the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety for consideration.
