Two 16-year-olds were in custody in connection with an East St. Louis quintuple homicide, the Illinois State Police said, with officials describing the incident as “horrible, horrible crime,” with three different crime scenes and an investigation underway.
Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly during a press conference Sunday described the incident as a “targeted mass shooting against a family.”
“At least seven members of a targeted family were shot at multiple locations in East St. Louis,” Kelly said. “As of now, five victims are confirmed deceased.”
Kelly went on to say that two 16-year-old suspects were taken into custody in connection with the shootings after one of the suspects was seen driving a vehicle.
The shootings occurred in three different locations, Kelly said. Three victims shot and killed at the Samuel Gompers Homes in the 400 block of North 6th Street; one was fatally shot at 39th and Summit streets, and one was shot and killed at Jones Park.
Two others were shot at Jones Park, Kelly said, and were transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
Kelly did not provide details on what led up to the shooting, other than to say that the victims were related.
According to ISP, the following five deceased victims have been identified:
49-year-old Cherie L. May
24-year-old Devin D. May
74-year-old Patricia A. May
21-year-old Quentin L. Thompson
25-year-old Shania W. Thompson
An investigation remains underway, Kelly said.
East St. Louis, southwestern Illinois, has a population of approximately 18,000 people.
