Village trustees in suburban Arlington Heights have approved the creation of a four-block district where residents can purchase and consume alcoholic beverages on public ways.
Under provisions of the ordinance passed by the board on Monday, a special “social district” will be created over several blocks, with residents permitted to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages “upon designated streets and rights-of-way,” according to the text of the ordinance.
The measure was approved during a Monday board meeting, with the start date for the program arriving on July 30.
According to the measure, the zone, commonly known as a “sip-and-stroll” zone in other parts of the country, will include Campbell Street between Highland Avenue and Dunton Avenue. It will also include Vail Avenue between the entrance to a parking garage and Wing and Davis streets.
Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, individuals will be able to receive village-issued wristbands, which they can then display to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages. Those beverages must be purchased from establishments that apply for permits from the village, and must be consumed within the designated boundaries of the “social district.”
Individuals must wear village-issued wristbands, and the beverages must be purchased from establishments with valid liquor licenses and that have been approved to sell those beverages within the proposed social district.
According to the measure, the program will be in place from July 30 to September 26 of this year.
