Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings and watches were issued Friday afternoon, with some suburbs already canceling their July 3 fireworks shows due to thunderstorms and ground stops in place at O’Hare and Midway airports.
The warnings come as the first of several rounds of strong storms was moving through the Chicago area, with most of northeastern Illinois under a “slight” risk of severe weather. As of 12:30 p.m., Live Doppler 5 radar showed a line heavy rain and storms stretching from the southwest to the northeast.
Tornado sirens sounded in some northwest suburban communities while tornado warnings and other alerts were issued in parts of Wisconsin, including popular summer travel spots like Lake Geneva.
