Jewel-Osco pulls 2 salsa products from shelves over jalapeño recall

Jewel-Osco is recalling two salsa items over concerns of possible salmonella contamination connected to a jalapeño pepper recall, the company announced Saturday.

According to the grocery chain, the Chefs Kitchen Fresh Salsa and the ReadyMeals Fresh Salsa contain jalapeños that were recalled by Direct Roots, a Taylor Farms distributor, due to their ties to the ongoing Coast Citrus Distributors FDA recall.

The following products with the specified UPC numbers and sell-thru dates are subject to the recall:

  • Chefs Kitchen Fresh Salsa -21660700000 – July 31 through Aug. 10
  • ReadyMeals Fresh Salsa – 29487800000 – July 31 through Aug. 10

Customers shouldn’t consume the items and are instead asked to either dispose of them or return them to their local Jewel-Osco for a full refund.

Salmonella, the most common form of bacterial food poisoning in the U.S., is marked by diarrhea, stomach pains or cramps, fever, nausea and vomiting and headache, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The outbreak comes as more than a dozen states report an unrelated increase in cases of the foodborne illness cyclosporiasis, NBC News reported. Health officials have traced an outbreak to lettuce served at Taco Bell that was supplied by Taylor Farms and sourced from central Mexico.
