Power outages in northwest Indiana are so bad you can see them from space

The power outages in northwest Indiana after catastrophic storms this week were so bad that you can see them from space.

NASA satellite images show the difference between light emitted from the northwest Indiana and Chicago area before and after the derecho storms.

“At peak, more than 60% of NIPSCO’s electric customers were without power, making this one of the largest outage events in company history,” the utility said on its website.

On the right is from Sunday, August 9, — days before the storms — and on the left is from Thursday, August 13, when approximately 317,000 outages were reported across northwest Indiana, according to NIPSCO.

NIPSCO crews have been working around the clock all week to restore power, helping more than 163,000 customers since the start of the storms on Tuesday.

As of 11 a.m. on Saturday, 158,000 NIPSCO customers were still without power.
