Tornado touched down in LaSalle County during Sunday storms, officials say

The National Weather Service has released preliminary findings of a tornado that touched down in LaSalle County Sunday night.

Amid a severe weather outbreak that led to numerous watches and warnings on Sunday, debris signatures were observed by the NBC 5 Storm Team as a severe thunderstorm ripped through the southern parts of the station’s viewing area.

On Monday, the National Weather Service reported damage assessments revealed an EF-1 tornado touched down to the north and northwest of the town of Ransom, located in LaSalle County.

The tornado packed estimated wind speeds of up to 95 miles per hour, according to the preliminary estimates.

Damage assessment teams are still looking into other areas where tornadoes may have touched down in the Chicago area, though several others touched down in western parts of the state, including in Peoria County and in the community of Geneseo, located along Interstate 80.

Another round of severe weather could impact the Chicago area on Monday night, with the entire region at a “slight” risk of severe storms. All severe weather hazards are on the table, including gusty winds, heavy rain and a non-zero chance of tornadoes, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
