Chicago's Buckingham Fountain abruptly shuts down for maintenance

Chicago’s iconic Buckingham Fountain will be shut down “until further notice” as the city performs maintenance on the attraction.

According to an alert from the Chicago Park District, the fountain was shut down Tuesday and will remain down “until further notice” due to unspecified maintenance.

“Please check back for updates. We apologize for any inconvenience this downtime may cause,” the park district said on its website.

The fountain is one of Chicago’s greatest attractions, located in Grant Park just across DuSable Lake Shore Drive from Lake Michigan. The fountain typically opens in the spring and remains open through late October, according to the park district’s website.

During the season, the fountain has hourly displays, with water shooting up to 150 feet in the air. After dusk, those displays are accompanied by lights and music each hour until the fountain closes for the evening at 11 p.m.

It’s unclear when the fountain will reopen, and the city is encouraging residents to check the park district’s website for additional information.
