Some are calling the 2026 season for the Chicago White Sox a “miracle” — could Da Pope have anything to do with it?
Pope Leo XIV was asked that very question by a reporter Thursday.
The Sox became the first team in major league history to follow consecutive 100-loss seasons with a playoff berth — and that may not be all.
That’s because they still have their sights set on a division title.
The excitement and shock around the Sox isn’t just that the team was two years removed from losing 121 games, setting a post-1900 record, or that no team had made the playoffs after consecutive 100-loss seasons — let alone three in a row. But even midway through April, they were making good — err, bad? — on most folks’ expectations, starting 6-13 and looking every bit the part of a perennial loser.
But then their youngsters starting slugging, and the White Sox started piling up wins.
So when asked if Pope Leo was involved in some sort of divine intervention, he answered.
“No comment,” he said with a smile. “Great things happen in Chicago.”
Da Pope, as he has been affectionately nicknamed in Chicago, is a longtime Sox fan and has made his fandom widely known.
For their part, the White Sox have paid homage to the pope at Rate Field and beyond, even giving out Sox Pope Hats during a game this season. The team also announced their 2026 schedule with a “Conclave” theme, and Pope Leo delivered a special message to Chicago during a special celebration at Rate Field last year.
