A Chicago-bound British Airways plane that departed London Monday made an emergency landing back at Heathrow Airport after a “technical issue,” with flight tracking sites showing the jet descending 27,000 feet in a matter of minutes.
According to flight tracking website FlightAware, British Airways Flight2PD departed London Heathrow Airport at 11:50 a.m. local time. After about 30 minutes in the air and reaching an altitude of 35,000 feet, the Boeing 777 sharply descended to 9,000 feet while flying over Ireland, the website showed.

The aircraft then turned around and started flying back towards Heathrow Airport, the site showed, appearing to zig-zag for hours before landing safely back in London.

“The aircraft landed safely after our highly-trained pilots returned to Heathrow following a technical issue,” British Airways said in an emailed statement to NBC News. “Customers disembarked the aircraft normally and our teams are working to get their travel plans back on track as quickly as possible.”
