A Chicago man has been charged with several crimes after walking into a police station in Greater Grand Crossing and saying he killed his girlfriend, authorities said.
Jerry Powe, 58, is accused of killing his girlfriend and kidnapping and sexually assaulting another woman. He faces felony charges of first-degree murder, murder involving a strong probability of death or injury, three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault involving a weapon and aggravated kidnapping.
Police said Powe caused fatal injuries to a 36-year-old woman who was found dead inside a home in the 8100 block of South Ellis Avenue around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her cause of death as strangulation.
Authorities said Powe lives on the block, though it was unclear if the alleged crime occurred at his residence.
According to a police report, Powe walked into the 3rd District Police Station, went up to the front desk, said “I killed my girlfriend…” and provided a location. He was taken into custody, searched by officers and taken to an interview room.
Officers then went to the location, where they met Chicago Fire Department personnel and found the woman dead.
Powe is also accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 28-year-old woman at the same location. Additional details on the alleged crimes have yet to be released.
